The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews ‘Decent Company’ by Catthew O., AKA Bubblegum Octopus.

Posted by

Happy May, folks!

This month, I chose to shed some light on an album hosting home to 26 tracks called ‘Decent Company’, created by a New Jersey based artist, releasing under the moniker of ‘Catthew O.’. Also known as ‘Bubblegum Octopus‘, Catthew O. prepared a wonderfully eclectic final product containing music created specifically for Weekly Beats.

Weakly Beats, which was recently held in 2016, is an online site that previously allowed composers to upload original music once a week, every week, for the entirety of the year. While I did not personally participate in WB, I found it to be a great forum for creativity and I do hope it opens up again in the next year to come; it’s a fantastic place for musicians to congregate, and outcomes like ‘Decent Company’ are always fantastic to come by.

Chip Bit Day 2017 – Free cake, alien balloons and Europe’s finest Chipmusic!

Posted by

May 6th saw the return of Chip Bit Day; a celebration of Chiptune organised by Richard Lewis who you might know as blogger ‘Chip! Bit! Sid!‘ or by his musical pseudonym ‘Jellyatrix.’ Primarily funded by fans using sites like Indiegogo, Chip Bit Day’s second year was just as popular as the debut! With a lineup including festival favourites such as HarleyLikesMusic, and plenty of free goodies from Game Boy cartridge stickers of the performing artists to delicious cake, crowdfunders definitely got plenty for their money. I arrived good and early on the Saturday afternoon, ready for the hard slog of an 8-hour Chiptune marathon to find a few others eager for the show to start.

Stokin’ the Forge: DEEP MAGIC by Tri Angles

Posted by

Given his extensive career and the breadth of his library, I’d be surprised if most of our community hadn’t experienced some aspect of the work of Tri Angles (or his previous identity, SMILETRON).  If you’re such a reader, it should come as no surprise that ‘Deep Magic’ is a solid addition to the library of any fan of this particular variety of ambient drum and bass. For the uninitiated, I can wholeheartedly recommend this album as a great diving in spot to an extremely mentally engaging artist. Thematically drifting along the spectrum of driven to meditative, ‘Deep Magic’s composition will instill focus and energy into its listeners.  Join me past the fold where we’ll take an in depth listen to just a few of the new pieces.

What’s On Tap – PAULA POWERED

Posted by

This month’s edition of ‘What’s on Tap?’ is fortunate in its timing, with a new release matching up perfectly with the beer style I wanted to discuss this month. Combining PAULA POWERED’s new chip punk EP ‘Level Up’ with good weather and a cold hefeweizen is a recipe for success.

Many of the artists that I review on the ChipWIN blog – most notably Danimal Cannon and Norrin_Radd – gravitate towards heavy, complex music. While I enjoy music in this vein, the simplicity of the textures and importance of the message inherent in punk music is something that also really speaks to me. In their new EP, PAULA POWERED blends punk ethos with well-produced chip music mixing vocals, guitar, and the Amiga 1200. Although punk is often intentionally lo-fi, fans can expect to hear slightly more melodic singing and fantastic production from this release; think less Germs/Minor Threat and more Clash/Stooges. Onward!

ChipWIN-tern Spotlight: ‘The Frequency Modulators Orchestra Vol. 1’ by Amplitude Problem

We all like solo projects, right? They’re always cool.  Someone who’s been doing their thing as a part of a group or a series of collaborations gets to do their own thing.  They give themselves the opportunity to open up the throttle and do what they really want to do. Lo and behold, I have such an offering for you! The latest release on Ubiktune, ‘The Frequency Modulators Orchestra Vol. 1’ by Amplitude Problem, is the newest project from demoscene veteran Juan Irming.

Kuma’s Quick Shots #23 ft. Gigibyte, Thorazine Unicorn, and 8-Bit Mullet

Posted by
  • Heyo, ChipWINners! Welcome back to Quick Shots! This month, I’ll be reviewing work from three artists across the creative spectrum who have each brought something rather unique to the table. The first is a debut EP from a chiptuner with EDM leanings. The second is an artist I’ve featured in my interview column who has recently put out two new singles. The third is an offering that skews more towards Nerdcore than chiptune, but was too unique to pass up on sharing with all of you. So lets not waste any more time. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the works of Gigibyte, Thorazine Unicorn, and 8-Bit Mullet.
