Familiar Faces in New Places: ANAMANAGUCHI & Friends at The Broadberry

Posted by

We all know that ANAMANAGUCHI, despite their rebranding away from chiptunes, is still one of the most successful bands from the early 00’s era of chiptune still performing. I never give up a chance to see a good band live, so when I heard they were coming to Richmond again I hopped on it. They didn’t reveal their guest performers – Chipocrite with Rekcahdam, Gull and Lazerdisk – until right before the show. I’m sure by now you all know how I feel about Paul and Roger, but the other two bands I’d never heard of – and given the fact that this was the first show I was seeing at The Broadberry, one of Richmond’s newer venues, I was extremely hyped for what was to come. Chip Treatment with Professor Oakes: ‘Ghost Stories’ by Together We Are Robots

Through my stay here on the ChipWIN Blog, I’ve written many album reviews about a handful of talented musicians, and thus a plethora of eclectic coverage has emerged. Through this journey, where I once started as a novice but passionate listener, I feel pretty confident in my ability to decipher the thoughts in my head as to why I think something sounds great. While I am not a classically trained musician, or studied music theory, or even identify as a musician (…yet), I have become much more constructive when I listen to an album. Leading up to this very album review today, I tend to gravitate toward releases that satisfy a minimum of three requirements: Personality, Composition, and Mixing—and I can very confidently say that these very three things are ubiquitous throughout ‘Ghost Stories’, Together We Are Robots’ first studio album released through Bandcamp on March 11, 2015. ChipWIN-tern Spotlight: Decktonic’s ‘Gulf Coast EP’

Posted by

I have a confession about myself: I really love funk. Disco and funk are my two favorite musical genres (since chiptune can be argued to be something bigger than a genre, it gets exempt here, of course!). But unfortunately, sometimes I feel like the only funk you’ll find in chiptune is if you go clean the gunk out of the cracks in your Gameboy that accumulates from years of sweaty hands handling it.

Thankfully, people like Christian Montoya exist. The man of many side projects known to some as Decktonic works hard to put out as much funky stuff under his various aliases as he can while juggling his life as a father and programmer. He dropped ‘Gulf Coast EP’ in February, which might have snuck by you if you weren’t paying attention – which is why we’re here, because sleeping on this is a mistake. (more…)

Aydan Appreciates & Interviews: ‘FROgs’ & The Laohu

Posted by

You might’ve heard of The Laohu through the grapevine, or via his track from ChipWIN: Volume 3, Bash of the Kaiju, or maybe you’ve just been a long-time fan of his since he started releasing music back in 2012. Regardless, it’s been almost three years since he last released an album through Bandcamp. In mid-March, he put out his latest musical endeavor through the Pxl-Bot label entitled ‘FROgs’, and the result is an eclectic mix of genres spanning progressive rock to electro. Without further ado, let’s take a look at The Laohu’s latest piece of work! (more…)
