Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 4 [Tracks 1 – 5]

Posted by

Welcome to the first of our upcoming track-by-track reviews for the newly-released Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 4! Although the scope and reach of ChipWIN has expanded over the past few years, the annual compilation release remains the central focus of this enterprise: the Wrestlemania to your Royal Rumble, the World Series to your All-Star weekend, or the Metroid Prime to your Other M, as it were. In addition to general exposure for the artists involved and supporting the small but passionate chip music community, this compilation is always exciting to me because I get to hear what some of my favorite artists have been working on, as well as discovering new favorites among familiar names. Make sure to grab your copy from the link above, and let’s get this review started – it’s oppressively hot outside, and this album is about to make the A/C kick into overdrive!

Hoodie Highlights… Chris De Pew!

Sup y’all? =) President Hoodie back once again with another edition of my monthly CWB interview column, Hoodie Highlights! While today’s chat does technically continue my ongoing visualist-centric series, it also features a notable chipartist. How is this possible? Because they’re one and the same. Everyone, welcome Chris De Pew aka Storm Blooper aka Enerjawn to the blog! Enjoy!

8bitLA and 8bitSF Presents: Freq.Fest.NorCal!

Posted by

Greetings, readers! It feels like it’s been quite sometime since I posted a pre-show hype article, and what better time to do it than this summer season? Whether it’s keeping busy by reviewing rad albums that come across my radar (here’s my latest!), doing visuals for shows that have transcontinental coverage by Chiptunes = WIN’s very own Adam Seats, or attending MAGFest’s first West Coast expansion event, MAGQuest, there’s certainly never a dull moment in the life of the Prof.

As 8bitLA’s two year anniversary has passed, the cohesive team composed of Kevin “Wizwars” Martinez, Jesse Avila, Rob Duffy, Terence Calacsan, Tim Abad, Jamie Cristal, Calvin (redacted) and myself, have smashed noggins together in the height of the Freq.Fest era and will be invading San Jose, CA with 8bitSF to present the inaugural edition of Freq.Fest.NorCal, taking place September 11–12 at SLG Art Boutiki & Gallery!

The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews ‘Girls Make Games’!

Posted by

This month’s review is a little different than the past reviews that I’ve done – instead of it being about an album, it’s about a really unique experience I had where I shared the art of game audio, including the history of chiptune, with a fairly new camp called Girls Make Games. The camp was created by Laila Shabir, a graduate of MIT and CEO of LearnDistrict, an educational game company. The objective of the camp is to put an end to the gender gap in the gaming industry by recruiting young females with prior interest in gaming to show them how to create their own video games and the process required to do so.
