The Unicorn Princess’ Start Guide for Live Gigging

Posted by

Happy January, folks!

This month, instead of the usual review, I decided to put together a helpful guide for those looking for more insight on playing live shows. Playing shows can be super fun, but being less than prepared can cause a ton of stress.

Here’s the scenario: Your show’s date is set. You have a month or more to prepare. Tons of time, right? Wrong. Chances are, you’ll procrastinate. You have other gigs to focus on. You’re working on an EP (or four). You’ve got somewhere between one and three jobs. You might be studying. Maybe you have a family.  Everyone has a million things on their plate, and that’s OK. It’s normal. With that in mind, you need to keep your eyes on the prize, because rule number one of this whole thing is:

  1. If you commit to something, do everything in your power to produce good results.

Maybe you just like playing shows for fun. Maybe music is how you pay your bills. Maybe you create as a way to express yourself, maybe you’re more of a programmer and are developing music tech tools as a way to test them. Whatever. Regardless of why you’re part of the industry, it all comes down to this:  If you are not reliable, people won’t want to work with you. People serious about their craft do not mingle with people who aren’t dependable, professional, and on time. It doesn’t matter what field that you’re in.  As Jim Rohn said in one of my favorite quotes: jim_rohn_find_a_way_motivational_vinyl_wall_decoration__51411.1422495171.1280.1280 (more…)

Hoodie Highlights… Sam Wray!

Sup y’all? =) President Hoodie here with the first Hoodie Highlights of 2016! Woohoo! =D

Getting things rolling along nicely for the new year, today’s feature is with one of my favorite “doers” in chiptune. A young Brit I had the pleasure of finally working with last year, and who has already accomplished more in chiptune than he really has any right to at his age. Of course I’m talking about Sam Wray aka 2xAA! Enjoy!

8-Bit Banter with DjjD: Toni Leys – ‘Blast Processor’

Posted by

As I first came to know of Toni through ‘Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 3‘, his first impression was a lasting one. I can count at least on 50 different occasions showing that track specifically to friends (who were really never too keen on electronic music in general) that there’s a lot that can be done in the genre. While most just turn towards popular artists and whatever is blaring on the radio, it’s amazing what you can find with just a little research. Now, being a part of this community, I guess it eases the amount of sifting through unpleasant tracks because, by and large, this place is filled with talented musicians and amazing composers. We come here to hear new tunes but we stay for the wealth of knowledge that gets passed around. Now then, ladies and gentlemen, I present Toni Leys.

Toni Leys - Blast Processor - cover

With a cover like that, you can tell at least one of two things.

Number #1: This guy knows his Genesis commercials.

Number #2: He likes the YM2612 soundchip (a lot).

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Chema64 – ‘VIZIERS’

Posted by

Unfortunately no ‘4 smalls songs’ this month, instead I’ll be looking at Chema64’s VIZIERS. A bit of context, Chema64 is an LSDJ artist who resides in Mexico City, Mexico. For his music he solely just uses Nintendo Gameboys, creating a mayhem of different sounds. As well as that, Chema64 also founded 56kpsrecords, a netlabel whose goal is to promote chiptune music. Before I begin reviewing, this is the first time I’ve listened to Chema64’s music and I must say it is probably one of the most hard hitting, glitched music I’ve heard, all whilst still containing a groove through out and pouring some sweet WAV dubstep into the mix. It’s hard to believe that all this music has actually been done entirely on LSDJ.

ChipWIN-tern Spotlight: ‘DESKTAPE’

Posted by

This may come as a rather large shock to you, but here at Chiptunes = WIN, we really like compilations. We really, really like them. And what’s better than listening to a compilation that we put together ourselves? Listening to one that someone else put together! It’s like all the joy of getting a mixtape from your crush without the sweaty palms and the queasy feeling that gets worse the more you try not to think about it (that wasn’t just me, right?). Enter DESKPOP, the new label by FLOOR BABA and Braz_OS. They got all sorts of folks together to drop the last great compo of 2015 – and if you haven’t heard, you’re about to be in for a helluva trip.
