Chris Considers: ‘Technokinesis’ by Meganeko

Posted by

Greetings to you all, fans of chiptune! The last few weeks have been an exciting time in the chiprealm, as we’ve seen the triumphant return of some beloved artists within the scene whose next releases have been hotly anticipated: Tri Angles, Electric Children, and Meganeko, just to name a few. I first discovered the supremely talented Swede, Meganeko’s, music through the Chiptune + Charity Bundle #4 back in early 2014. The included album was his debut, ‘Robot Language’, which remains one of my favorite and most impressive debut albums to this day.

Meganeko’s music hooks you with the perfect hybrid blend of hard-hitting drum & bass and beautifully carefree melodies that you didn’t know you needed until the moment they hit your eardrums. I can remember Meganeko posting at the time that bundle was live how thrilled and honored he was to be featured in a bundle alongside artists such as Shirobon, and here we are a few years later and he’s just released ‘Technokinesis’, his most killer EP yet, on Shirobon’s netlabel Hyperwave Records! Continuing in the ChipWIN tradition of always moving onward and upward; seeing and hearing these artists collaborate, grow and inspire one another is what makes me love this music scene so much. Hit the jump for a few examples of why ‘Technokinesis’ is a cyberpunk thrillride that deserves your attention.

Kuma’s Quick Shots: Round 18

Hey there, ChipWINners! Welcome back to Quick Shots: the album review column in which I break down the finer points of some of the latest releases in the scene, then give you a numerical TL;DR to help you determine if a record is right for you.  This month, I have two albums up for review that explore spaces I’ve yet to discuss on the blog.  One is a metal album that incorporates vocals via the Hatsune Miku Vocaloid software, and has incredibly powerful lyrics.  The other is an album from an accomplished pianist who has composed a very stirring concept album using the tracker software in the Pico-8 virtual console.  Both albums albums caught me off guard and have a lot to offer their respective audiences.  That said, let’s not waste anymore time! Sit back, relax, and plug in those headphones as I take the time to review the latest from 8-Bit Hero and Gruber.

Aydan Appreciates: ‘RESET’ by Electric Children

Posted by

Veterans of both the chiptune community as a whole and ChipWIN alone will likely recognize Electric Children, be it just the name, one of his numerous timeless albums, or ‘Pills and Needles VIP‘ from ChipWIN’s first expansion pack. Electric Children has been producing music since 2011, and his work spans a multitude of genres, including dubstep, electro, and drum ‘n’ bass among others. On his latest album, ‘RESET’, Electric Children takes this term quite literally and utilizes a more old-school compositional style, creating a unique sound that could be compared to chipmusic titan Fighter X. Why don’t we check out what Electric Children’s been up to for the last year?
