Kuma’s Quick Shots #22: SuperStranger and Ryuichi Nitta

Posted by

Hey there, ChipWINners! Welcome back to Quick Shots: the album review column in which I pick the latest and greatest the scene has to offer, and dissect it to help you determine if it’s worth your attention.  This time around, I have two EPs for you from two names that should be very familiar to you.  The first is from an artist I’ve featured previously on the blog who has upped their game considerably, and has fully embraced the simplicity of the Game Boy as a synthesizer. The other is a certifiable legend who has composed music for titles that helped define childhood for a generation the world over. Let’s not delay any longer.  Sit back, relax, and enjoy as I take the time to review the latest from SuperStranger and Ryuichi Nitta.

The ChipWIN Blog Hack: The Postmortem

Posted by

Last week on the CWB — the world was in disarray as nasty Russian porn spam assaulted the brave viewers of the mobile version of the blog.  President Hoodie made the decision to limit the spread of the pixelated and badly size-ratioed X-Rated images by halting blog operations for the week while ViridianForge and Chaney teamed up to figure out just what the heck had gone wrong. If you decide to jump past the fold, you’ll find out just what they discovered. This article is heavy on the technical detail for us, so before you dive in, take a look at these adorable kittens.

PAUSE

Unfortunately, I’ve some poopy news to share. Due to some punkass haxx0ring The ChipWIN Blog with shady porn redirects, we have no choice but to suspend all publishing & shut the blog down until that junk has been sorted.

Please be patient with us as our web dev team works hard with their limited free time to correct the issues at hand. Will report back with progress as soon as there’s any to report. Thanks in advance for your understanding.

The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews ‘Paradise’ & Interviews DBOYD

Posted by

It’s been a minute since I’ve published here on the blog, and it’s good to be back. I return with the news of an incredible release by none other than an Oklahoma native that you might all know by the name of DBOYD (Don’t Blink Or You’ll Die). ‘Paradise’ was released on January 27th, 2017 via Galaxy Swim Team and the EP consists of music from straight out of Game Boy. Listening to releases so cleanly recorded and intricate really made me want to sit down and devour everything Little Sound Dj can do and I suggest you all buy the record to feel the same inspiration that I’m feeling.

The Download on… Jellyatrix’s ‘E Numbers’

Posted by

Anyone in the UK chiptune scene will probably know the author of this album, if not by the name Jellyatrix then by his music blog moniker ‘Chip! Bit! Sid!’ Based in Manchester, he runs the Chip Bit Day festival as well as featuring in a couple of GameFace’s ChipBattles shows. ‘E Numbers’ marks Jellyatrix’s first formal release using LSDj, and it’s a very solid start!

Fives and Nines: Tuberz McGee reviews ‘The Life and Times of Whiskers Mahone’ by Hoffy

Posted by

Editor’s Note: looks like we’ve got our first new blood of 2017! Everyone, welcome Callum Kennedy aka Tuberz McGee to the blog!

Hoffy is by no means a newcomer to the Chiptune scene and it is my pleasure to review his seminal work ‘The Life and Times of Whiskers Mahone’ released through our good friends at Cheapbeats. Hoffy hails from Edmonton, Alberta, wielding a mighty laptop running 0CC-Famitracker in one hand and a calculator generating random time signatures in the other [citation needed]. Most of you may know me as Tuberz McGee and after spending the last year writing an Honours Thesis on Chiptune I’m really itching to get into this. Let’s roll.

I think the album is about a cat. A cat who probably listens to Rush and Genesis a lot.
