Glenntai Got Em Português by The J. Arthur Keenes Band

Posted by

Samba is a music genre that isn’t often heard in the realm of chipmusic. From chords with some complexity to rhythmic layers, I can understand this isn’t the easiest thing to tackle with very limited hardware. While still possible to really capture the spirit of the genre, it needs a wider range of sounds than ones typically provided in either hardware or software. Therefore, of all the artists out there, it makes perfect sense that The J. Arthur Keenes band would come along and provide us with a cover album of their favorite samba songs that’s warm and full of the same quality we’ve all known to expect and love. If you don’t know why that was an exciting statement, it’s time for you to click read more.

Glenntai Got Inkblot Butterfly by Dogs++

If you search for Dogs++ (Dogs Plus Plus) anywhere, you might get sidetracked looking at pictures of dogs for a while. While a nice consolation prize, I’m sure Hoodie would have been furious if I just posted dogs everywhere. Fortunately, I totally resisted all temptation of diving into pictures and videos of adorable doggos, and got right into focusing on Inkblot Butterfly, the latest album from Dogs++ (previously known as Powersupply.)

Glenntai Got: Business Pastel

2018 has been a good start for chipmusic, and we can easily thank those who released music in the prior year for that. 2017 had some very high-key releases that managed to overshadow many others due to their surge in popularity and the quality of their music being nothing short of top-notch. As a community this is a great “problem” to have, but from an individual artist perspective it can be very tough for new or less-popular acts. If you haven’t listened to it yet, you might accidentally have slept on Business Pastel’s self-titled debut album, which deserves the attention of anyone in chipmusic that enjoys dance music with vibes of electro, future bass, d&b and hints or suggestions of other genres.

Glenntai Got: “Don’t Wait” by mal4m

Let’s face some hard truths, no matter how popular chiptune gets (as a niche medium), there have always been a lot of people thinking it’s starting to fade away. The reality, though, is that isn’t even close to true. There will always be jaded people; this is inevitable. However chiptune, much like synthesizers in the 80’s, has helped many people evolve their tastes in music beyond just what they expected. A lot of expectations were the concept of the nostalgia and limitations of the sound of a single console or a few combined. It has brought people into a whole new perspective of appreciating composition, sound design, and genres they never expected to find growing on them. People who haven’t explored their music tastes before chip music are exploring the wide variety of music that’s out there. We have people continuing to put chiptune elements and chip music influences in their music, whether it’s strictly hardware, strictly software, or somewhere in between. This is exactly where mal4m’s EP, “Don’t Wait,” comes into play.

Glenntai Got: ‘Confessions’ by Windfallen

Posted by

When most people uninitiated to the world of chiptune hear of the concept, one of the things I’ve commonly heard were about its perception of being upbeat, faster-paced, or joyous in nature. I’m sure there are endless examples of popularized chipmusic that fit this description (such as Anamanaguchi’s album “Endless Fantasy”.) A great example that goes against this perception would be Windfallen’s latest release, “Confessions”. This EP sounds more like a journey through one’s regrets and the tensions built from around it. After the jump, you’ll see why this album should go into your collection for when you need that change of pace.
