Aydan Appreciates: ‘Closed System Blues’ by Bit Shifter

Posted by

The last thirty or so days have been enormous for fans of chipmusic. Between a new boaconstructor EP, ChipWIN: Volume 7, a new Chunderfins LP, and various other new albums, we’ve been gifted with a simply staggering amount of high-quality material to soothe our ears. On September 10th, the legendary Bit Shifter has graced our community with a brand new release titled ‘Closed System Blues’. At times blissfully peaceful and pensive, and at others pugnacious and adrenalized, ‘Closed System Blues’ showcases a difficult to match diversity in composition. I’m honored to have been presented with the opportunity to review an album by this master of his craft, so without further ado, let’s dig in!

I, too, am going to go ahead and skip what could be a wordy introduction, and delve into tracks 31 through 40 of this simply amazing volume.

A more minimalistic, yet super cool approach to V.7 album artwork from Karl Ericksen.

Aydan Appreciates: ‘started commuting’ by Ello Costello

Posted by

Hey there, ChipWINners. It’s been a few months since I’ve written an article due to some extremely time-occupying life events, but I’m happy to be back now! At the end of May, Cheapbeats released an EP showcasing a new artist in the community named Ello Costello. This artist certainly isn’t a stranger to producing music; he’s released a few EPs independently prior to this, such as the freely composed ‘Just For Fun‘ and the environmentally influenced ‘Small Windows‘. With influence and assistance from DonutShoes, an artist who’s been featured on ‘ChipWIN: Volume 5‘ and on ‘Volume 6‘, Ello Costello makes his stunning debut in our niche with ‘started commuting’. Throughout this EP, Ello Costello draws influence from morning cityscapes, the excitement of travel, and his own musical interests. Let’s see what this release has in store for us!

Aydan Appreciates: ‘Snö’ by Ujico*/Snail’s House

We all love our chipmusic here on the blog. Many of us are familiar with the various kinds of hardware, software, and their unique sounds, be they the NES, the Genesis, the Game Boy, or some other kind of emulator with the express purpose of creating the tones we all know and love. But did you know that the future bass subgenre of electronic dance music is actually in a similar vein to chipmusic by extension? Future bass music is often loosely tied to VGM and chipmusic, and is defined predominantly by its use of synthesizers that are commonplace in all three of these scenes. Today, we’ll be looking at the latest Snail’s House release, ‘Snö’; something that’s particularly notable about this release is the difference in tone between this EP and the majority of Snail’s House’s previous works. Most of this artist’s pieces are high-energy, utilizing a multitude of voices and aggressive percussion to create wild, jazzy tunes, ‘Snö’, on the other hand, is more subdued and calm in nature, sounding something like a soundtrack from a futuristic RPG, but with emotional overtones. Without further ado, let’s see what ‘Snö’ has in store for us.

Aydan Appreciates: ‘Crunk Witch’ by Crunk Witch

Crunk Witch, an eclectic and eccentric geeky duo from Maine, is known for their heavy bass, explosive vocals, phenomenal production, and chipmusic-influenced style. They’re also known for touring extensively throughout the United States. Several times a year they come through the college town that I call home, Ithaca, to jam out at one of our favorite local pizza joints, The Nines. This is just a pit stop on their journey to rock the nation, and it’s always a treat to experience the sheer energy that flows through the packed bar during their shows. At these live events, they’ve teased some new material from their latest self-titled album, released a little more than four years after their most recent album, ‘Heartbeats in Hyperspace’. ‘Crunk Witch’ is packed with what long-time fans know and love the duo for, and is sure to open new fans’ eyes to their sheer talent. So come on, everybody; there’s a place we gotta go!

Aydan Appreciates: ‘Kintsugi’ by Calavera

A lot of the chipscene is based in either the Americas, Europe, or Asia. So many talented artists come from these four continents that we often forget about good ol’ Australia. With the recent influx of interest in Square Sounds Melbourne 2018, and a steady flow of music coming from Australian chipmusicians over the last few years, now seems like the perfect time to review one of the most recent works to come out of the region. Calavera is known for his down-tempo bass-filled bangers of tracks, and his most recent work, ‘Kintsugi’, certainly delivers them. We’ll be looking at three tracks from this album in-depth, so buckle up for one hell of a ride.
