It is well known within the Chipth Dimension™ that many of us among our musical collective are particularly enthralled by the mysteries of the cosmos; mention astronomy and/or cosmology around a bunch of chip nerds and you’ll see what I mean with a quickness.
Yet somehow, there inexplicably remains an unexplored dark void in the space themed chiptune compilations quadrant.
Back in 2011, before I had been formally introduced to chiptune, I listened to a lot of folk and indie artists. Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Tree People, and AJJ (then Andrew Jackson Jihad) dominated my playlists and YouTube history. I listened to that music so often that as I got older I had to start taking breaks from it because it felt too familiar. But nevertheless, those records maintained their value to me over the years, acting as my go-to answer when asked about the kind of music I like.
So what does all that have to do with ‘.--. ..- .-.. .-..’ by null? Well, there’s a special feeling you get when you hear a song that sounds enough like your favorite band to make you do a double take. When you find yourself wondering if you didn’t get the memo about their early-years alias. When you realize you’ve discovered something completely new, but so similar to what you’re fond of. It’s a good feeling – and when you hear chiptune in it, it’s an even better feeling. And here’s where I tell you all about it.

Of course, being a fan of classic style NES games like Adventure Island II and Legend of Zelda, when trying to find a suitable name I could not shake the concept that sometimes when playing, we cannot see the bigger picture, and so it’s helpful to see the interconnection of all levels and locations of a videogame that’s an overworld map. Hopefully this international column will help everyone discover hidden areas in places we normally wouldn’t even think about; hidden locations and bonus levels of the world of Chiptune music as we know it.
This Chiptune auteur was born in the cold lands of Trelew (Rawson department of the Chubut Province), in southern Argentina. Growing up in this small, desertic climate city, with lots of wind, where the ocean dominates the horizon, and southern winds cause sudestadas (a.k.a. Intense wind storms that may bring heavy rain) has definitely left an imprint on her art.

From all the options we have to listen and appreciate chiptune nowadays, it’s always nice to find some first-rate music made specifically to be played on a Sega Genesis. That’s why when I knew that there was a Montreal artist who makes it, I got myself ready for an incredible experience. Of course I’m talking about Game Genie Sokolov. Maybe you remember GG Sokolov’s tremendous work from ‘Chiptunes = WIN Vol. 5’, ‘Deskpop & ChipWIN’ or ‘FM: Possible 2‘; but this time we’ll talk about this new and super awe-inspiring album: ‘Insert Disk 02’ released through the French Canadian netlabel Lisbon Lux Records. So let’s take a look over it… Sega style!
From my earliest days on FlashFlashRevolution in 2008, I was intimately familiar with a few of RushJet1’s compositions. ‘Almost There’ and ‘Fighting for Control’ are two pieces that I remember fondly as two of my favorite files in the game, and his complicated rhythms and use of numerous melodic voices gave me a deeper appreciation for the finer things in chipmusic before I was fully aware of the genre and community. Just after Christmas Day of 2018, a game called ‘Rikki & Vikki’ was released with modest, yet positive, acclaim. ‘Rikki & Vikki’ is a puzzle-platformer that can be played alone or cooperatively, and is highly reminiscent of the ‘Mega Man’ series, with each puzzle taking place on a single screen. In addition to its lovable visual aesthetic, RushJet1’s soundtrack perfectly complements the game and stands alone as a marvelous example of chipmusic done well. Let’s dive in!
