The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews ‘Enjoy The Weather’ and Interviews OxygenStar

Posted by

Happy June, everybody! Ringing in the summer season, OxygenStar’s latest release is chock full of ear candy bass lines, well-written drum grooves, and catchy melodies.  Appropriately named as ‘Enjoy The Weather’, this happy-go-lucky and gritty lo-fi record was created with using the Sound Blaster 16 sound card, Adlib Tracker II, and tons of dedication.

Part of Planet Zaxxon’s intergalactic residence and record label, OxygenStar has been performing live since 2005, favoring the MS DOS computers, FM synthesis, and a drum kit. This month, I’ll touch on my favorite tracks off the album.  I even got the lucky chance to ask the artist himself about his past performances, his experience having his music on both the Jimmy Fallon Show and Gamestop commercials, and how he  creates the music that makes up OxygenStar.

Paul’s Pantry: ‘Kiss/Corrupt/Kill’ EP by Mizkai

Posted by

Hello beautiful people and thank you for reading The ChipWIN Blog! Today let’s steer clear from technobabble, we’re here to burst Techno Bubbles together with the Marvellous Mizkai! Hailing from her northern homeland in Wales, Mizkai has been sort of a missing link between Japan and the Isles for a few years now, channelling Japanese and Internet hardcore-sugar-pop culture into her stage alter-ego, and distilling it into the strongest, sweetest cuppa teas ever brewed on this side of the globe.

Even though Mizkai has been around in the scene for quite some time already, dishing out some truly tasty jams on her SoundCloud, she never was much of a fan of “big” or “official” releases, nor did she seem to need it to ascertain her musical and visual identity as an artist. ‘Kiss/Corrupt/Kill’ is an updated, enhanced and somewhat more mature version of her EP ‘Nintendork’, previously published on Bandcamp and sadly, no longer available.

But long before these releases already, Mizkai had been a driving force in the UK Chiptune scene, and where she shone the brightest was live. Quite literally so, might I add. Having had the pleasure of sharing a stage with her and witnessing her awe-inspiring, relentless performance, I was very excited when I heard about this EP. As you know, good jams go well with toast, so I had to be the one to review it. Here’s a selection of my personal favourite tracks.

The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews ‘Paradise’ & Interviews DBOYD

It’s been a minute since I’ve published here on the blog, and it’s good to be back. I return with the news of an incredible release by none other than an Oklahoma native that you might all know by the name of DBOYD (Don’t Blink Or You’ll Die). ‘Paradise’ was released on January 27th, 2017 via Galaxy Swim Team and the EP consists of music from straight out of Game Boy. Listening to releases so cleanly recorded and intricate really made me want to sit down and devour everything Little Sound Dj can do and I suggest you all buy the record to feel the same inspiration that I’m feeling.

Kuma’s Holiday Gift Giving Guide!

Posted by

Ahoy, ChipWINners! It’s great to see you again during this magical time of year.  You know, the holidays — regardless of whether or not you celebrate them — can be a great time to give to others you care about.  Whether it’s through direct gift giving, a Secret Santa, or a charitable donation, taking the time to help bring some joy to your loved ones is a truly noble act, but it can be trying, as well.  This is especially true for people who are new to the scene or are outside of it and are trying to find the perfect gift for that special lil tracker composer in their lives.  If you are someone who finds themselves in this position, fear not! For I’ll be listing a few things I’ve found throughout my years in the community that are meaningful, essential, and genuinely appreciated by those in it.

Sit back, take some notes, and get ready to figure out what to do with that time I helped you save, because it’s time to stuff some stockings with Kuma!

Santa Kuma’s come to ChipWIN Town! Ho ho ho~

ChipWIN-tern Spotlight: Battle of the Bits

If there’s one thing all of us at the blog stand for, it’s making sure that the chiptune community stays healthy and happy and continues to grow.

And baked goods. We stand for a happy, healthy, growing community and baked goods.

And dank memes. …alright look, so among the things we stand for are a happy, healthy, growing community, baked goods and dank memes. [Hoodie’s note: and beer. Don’t forget beer. Beer > memes tbh.] But while we share a lot about the last few, sometimes we neglect to take the time to report on happenings going on in and around the greater chip community outside of our general purview (i.e. outside of ChipWIN in general, as damn, there’s a lot going on there as is!).

And thus I’d like to take a moment to chat with you about Battle of the Bits.

Chris Curates: The ChipWIN Holiday Gift Guide

Posted by

Happy Holidays to one and all! It’s that time of year again. Snow is falling on the blog, President Hoodie has made another amazing announcement, and we’re all scrambling for the perfect Christmas gift. As we all partake in the time-honored tradition of rampant consumerism, why not support some kickass chiptune artists while we’re at it? I think that’s a swell idea. Which is why I’ve decided to use this month’s review column to do a little something different. It’s the ChipWIN Holiday Gift Guide!
