Hello everyone. If you haven’t heard I’m yet again organising Chip Bit Day and it’s in its 4th year. I never thought I’d do another one after 2016, but here we are. As with all my Chip Bit Day articles, I will be showcasing each artist who is playing whilst picking a track that I think properly defines them. I would like to start this article off with an apology. Longtime fans of the blog may know that, generally, if I’m writing a post-event retrospective (i.e. PAX East or MAGFest) I make it a point to not only cover the music but also the various games I played at the event – highlighting indie games is one of my favorite things to do, as it helps smaller devs get some much needed press. Unfortunately, due to my increased duties helping sling merch at Chipspace this year, I was unable to play any games at MAG, so this year’s review is limited to the chiptune showcases that I caught at both Chipspace & main stage. Which isn’t to say there’s not a lot to talk about, because holy balls, there were a lot of awesome showcases at both venues!
Happy November, folks! For this month’s interview, I talked to a multi-instrument & multi-alias chipmusican & event curator friend of mine. This cat’s done quite a bit over the last handful of years (even more than I realized!), and shows no signs of stopping any time soon!

The MAGFest: Game Over series is a more intermittent offshoot of the greater MAGFest umbrella of events that fills some of the gaps between larger and more prominent episodes. Game Over: Richmond took place at Fallout in — well, Richmond — on Saturday, October 6th from 7pm to… Whenever it was we funneled out of there. I don’t remember. It was very late.
I’m in Hampton for work at the moment, so I figured I’d drop by and check it out. I wasn’t expecting much going in, but it was a total blast and I was inspired to share my experience when I saw that The ChipWIN Blog team was looking for new hands. Before we even got in the building, I noticed several #chipmoms there supporting their adult children, which was very sweet but also somewhat alarming, given the aura of the venue.
The event catered mostly to the local nerdcore scene, featuring popular “brand-name” regional acts and aspiring local artists in a (Bethesda) Fallout-themed barcade that moonlights as an exclusive BDSM club! CLEARLY the venue had a lot of different stuff going on, and it was extremely refreshing to see members of so many different subculture groups coming together to jam out to some retro tunes. If nothing else, it was (what I’d imagine is) a relatively unique opportunity to see a model cosplaying Bowsette rave-hopping her heart out to Castlevania remixes. So, I can cross that off my list of things that I didn’t know I needed to see.
In the early years of ChipWIN, I knew very little about chiptune, but I knew I loved the community, the shows, and my soon-to-be-hubby, so I wanted to help! I’ve sold a few Girl Scout cookies in my day and I’ll talk to anything that sits still long enough; not to mention that I have an unhealthy adoration for spreadsheets and data, so I decided to dive in and become Maven of the Merch Booth!

Hello everyone. For this month, I decided instead of an album review or talking about a concert I thought that I might perhaps offer some help to the community at large by addressing one of the things I see as a major common weakness: poor brand management. “Wait what,” I hear you say, “why are you teaching me an Intro to Business course here? I just want some dank bleep bloops, bro!” And that’s fine, because at the end of the day is not a man entitled to the bleep from his bloops? But for those of you who are interested in getting senpai to notice you, and by senpai I mean potential fans and friends, then I have some broad and functional advice for you in terms of making sure that what music you have is available to the most people and you can start being that cool kid who wears pastel colored 80’s and 90’s era windbreaker jackets, clear Wayfarer glasses, a geeky Snapback and patterned leggings that all the convention-goers want to throw their parents’ money at. Or whatever it is YOU deem as commercial success, I guess.
