Aydan Appreciates: ‘Random Smash Hits’ by Yoann Turpin

Posted by

Keyboardist, composer, and chipmusician Yoann Turpin has seen a number of his works featured in the ChipWIN community, be it his submission to the ChipWINter compilation, 2014’s ‘FriendChip’, or 2015’s ‘Chip Songbook Vol. 6’. His music is known throughout our niche for its funky vibes, his phenomenal work on the keys, and jazzy, improvisational solos that’re all ingredients for truly gorgeous music. His latest release, ‘Random Smash Hits’, is a collection of three short weeks’ worth of Turpin’s aural artwork. As if the sheer quantity of music he’s released in the last two years wasn’t enough to turn heads, the speed with which this album was composed and mastered is astounding.

So let’s see what chiptune chart-topping pieces lie in wait!

Guérin’s Dissections: ‘discredit denial destroy’ by Starving GOGO

Posted by

Italian musician Starving GOGO has been producing experimental chip for the past few years, and hell is it good. He’s not very well known over here in the States, and that’s a shame. Though a bit rough around the edges, he uses his clear mastery of Famitracker and LSDJ in incredibly unique compositions. Complexity and chaos abound in his latest release, ‘discredit denial destroy’.

What’s On Tap – Roboctopus

Posted by

Hello and welcome to the first sun-filled summer edition of What’s on Tap. This month I am pleased to be able to review the brand spankin’ new album ‘Your Heart is a Pie Chart’ by the one and only Roboctopus, released on the Cheapbeats netlabel. Not only do I get to talk about new music from one of my favorite artists, but we get to publish the review on the exact album release date of June 5th! Normally these reviews publish a few weeks to a month after a release, and this is an exciting opportunity for me to give a guided tour through an album that most everyone will not have heard yet. Grab a cold beverage and load up your Bluetooth speaker on the deck – we’re kicking off summer right… now!

Chip Bit Sid Takes on: Mega Ran & Guests “Live at the Castle Hotel”

Posted by

Last month I was given exclusive tickets to go and see ‘Mega Ran live’ in Manchester at the ‘Castle Hotel’, courtesy of my chiptune buddy, ‘Auracle’. Auracle would also be opening for the Arizona-based rapper. I’d seen’ Mega Ran’ a few times already; twice at Superbyte and then again when he opened for ‘MC Lars’. However, I couldn’t pass this up as the ‘Castle Hotel’  is one of the smallest venues in townwhich gives its concerts a real, personal vibe. Getting up close and personal with Ran and his impeccable openers was definitely a sell straight away for me.

For those who don’t know Mega Ran, he is one of the big rappers of Chiptune and Nerdcore, starting off by spewing videogame inspired lyrics over a wide range of retro VGM songs. The majority of his tracks were inspired by Capcom games like ‘Mega Man’ (shock) however ‘Final Fantasy’ is also heavily referenced too.

Advice from the Volume 6 Judging Panel

Posted by

Sup y’all? =) Brandon here taking a month off from interviewing folk to provide an interim article regarding ‘Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 6‘! For any of y’all living under a rock, this year’s annual Volume competition opened up a couple months back and has a submission deadline of July 2nd this year. To possibly assist, I’ve once again collected thoughts from the year’s judging panel to share with y’all in hopes that maybe they’ll come in handy. And hey, this year I actually did it far enough ahead of time to potentially be useful. Not bad, huh? ;)

For those curious, read on below the hella nifty judges’ profile pic collage!

Chip Bit Day 2017 – Free cake, alien balloons and Europe’s finest Chipmusic!

Posted by

May 6th saw the return of Chip Bit Day; a celebration of Chiptune organised by Richard Lewis who you might know as blogger ‘Chip! Bit! Sid!‘ or by his musical pseudonym ‘Jellyatrix.’ Primarily funded by fans using sites like Indiegogo, Chip Bit Day’s second year was just as popular as the debut! With a lineup including festival favourites such as HarleyLikesMusic, and plenty of free goodies from Game Boy cartridge stickers of the performing artists to delicious cake, crowdfunders definitely got plenty for their money. I arrived good and early on the Saturday afternoon, ready for the hard slog of an 8-hour Chiptune marathon to find a few others eager for the show to start.
