Aydan Appreciates: ‘Snö’ by Ujico*/Snail’s House

We all love our chipmusic here on the blog. Many of us are familiar with the various kinds of hardware, software, and their unique sounds, be they the NES, the Genesis, the Game Boy, or some other kind of emulator with the express purpose of creating the tones we all know and love. But did you know that the future bass subgenre of electronic dance music is actually in a similar vein to chipmusic by extension? Future bass music is often loosely tied to VGM and chipmusic, and is defined predominantly by its use of synthesizers that are commonplace in all three of these scenes. Today, we’ll be looking at the latest Snail’s House release, ‘Snö’; something that’s particularly notable about this release is the difference in tone between this EP and the majority of Snail’s House’s previous works. Most of this artist’s pieces are high-energy, utilizing a multitude of voices and aggressive percussion to create wild, jazzy tunes, ‘Snö’, on the other hand, is more subdued and calm in nature, sounding something like a soundtrack from a futuristic RPG, but with emotional overtones. Without further ado, let’s see what ‘Snö’ has in store for us.

The ChipWIN-tern Spotlight: ‘Shark Party’ by Sam Mulligan

“OH MY GOD, IT’S A SHARK PARTY!” If you’re Sam Mulligan, this is a sentence you’ve been singing a lot over the years. If you’re not Sam Mulligan but like his work, you’ll be shouting this today because ‘Shark Party’ is the name of his new album containing a number of tracks he’s sung live over the years but never recorded along with a few new gems. I’m so happy to get to yammer on about this album on this, its release day (and on the second day Sam is playing live shows to show it off, AND ON HIS BIRTHDAY HAPPY BIRTHDAY SAM!).

Clover Chain Reacts To: Kubbi – ‘Taiga’

My introduction is going to be a bit of a gushy personal disclaimer. Sometime in mid-February of 2015, I was chilling out at home browsing Bandcamp, skimming ‘videogame’ tags and fan accountsmy primary way of finding new music back then. I stumbled across Kubbi’s album ‘Ember’, a breathtaking experience that I fall in love with every time I hear it. It’s stuck with me all this time, and while I’m sure it’s influenced me as an artist, Ember has done much more to help shape me as a listener. Looking back, some things have stayed the same (I still spend an occasional evening all to myself on bandcamp), but there’s just so much that has changed since 2015. I discovered Chiptunes = WIN, learned new things. I made new friends, left high school, grew up… and now I find myself here. I know I wouldn’t want to be judged for who I was three years ago, and I certainly wouldn’t want my music to be judged by what I made back then either.

So, as honored as I am to be talking about one of my favorite artists, on one of my favorite blogs – I’m going to try and set that aside, and refrain from any comparisons in regards to Kubbi’s past work too. I’m honestly more excited for right now, and the memories that haven’t happened yet. I used to have one definitive favorite album. With ‘Taiga’, I now have two.

Progression: Music Theory 111 – Where Melody Ends and Harmony Begins

Hey dudes and dudettes,

I’m gearing up to drop my new album this month, so look out for a post on that in the future (probably next month) but for the meantime we can look at some hyper-cool music theory stuff.

Last month we covered the idea of Developing Musical Material. You’ll know by this point I’m going to rant about how I strongly advise you to go back and read through my previous articles which will will help contextualise what we know by this point. This month is where these separate puzzle pieces seem to start connecting, and creating a whole cohesive entity that is ‘Music Theory.’ We’ll be covering the idea of establishing harmony, mood, and feeling through the use of melody.

Let’s jam.

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Graz – ‘Monolith’

Hey guys. I’ve been extremely busy these past few months, mainly down to getting the funding secure for Chip Bit Day 18 (which you can read about it later on after the review). Thankfully I’m still finding time to do my reviews for ChipWIN! This month I’m reviewing an album that I’ve been sitting on for a while now; ‘Monolith’ by Graz and released with ‘Ravertooth Tiger’.

The last time I review a Graz album was back in 2016 with ‘Ravepunk’ and that released by ‘Cheapbeats’. It was a great listen whilst feeling incredibly boppy & funky. ‘Monolith’ however is a lot different compared to ‘Ravepunk’, sounding more heavy whilst feeling darker & grittier.

On House Shows, Part One: Curating Shows At Non-Venues

This month, as opposed to highlighting an album or a show, I’d like to talk to you about something many of you have either considered throwing or have performed at when given the chance – house shows! This is to be the first of a few articles I’ll be throwing down about community building and scene management, as I feel that this particular topic is one that doesn’t get a whole lot of analysis and as a result there are mistakes that plague the scene at large that could be avoided. But enough preamble – let’s talk about house shows.
