Chip Bit Sid Takes On: CDIY

Posted by

Originally I had a different idea for this weeks’ article, however after a discussion about how I created the CD for the latest chiptune compilation, I decided I thought I’d write about my own method. When I created the last compilation for Superbyte all those years ago, other than the artwork, I had no idea about the logistics required. It’s because of this, it set me back £40 ($52.81) for 100 inkjet CDs with cardboard sleeves. This time around for the Square Sounds compilation I had more knowledge in the area and in doing so I managed to create 25 b&w thermal heated CDs with a pearlescent cover and plastic case for just £20.

Shortly after seeing how successful this was, it made me realise that independent artists could easily produce their own merch on the cheap; it just requires time & the knowledge.

Kuma’s Quick Shots Special: Nanode

Posted by

Hey ChipWINners, and welcome back to Quick Shots: the monthly album review column that helps you determine if some of the latest offerings from the scene are worth diving into.  This month, I’ve decided that instead of presenting you with work from a splattering of artists across the spectrum, I’m going to focus on just one artist: Nanode.

Nanode is a young, jovial composer who has made quite a splash since joining the scene.  From his pulse pounding, stylish music to his reputation as a purveyor of memes; his contributions to The ChipWIN Blog to his role as a panel host at MAGFest, Sam Sher is representative of the longevity and potential chiptune has a scene and as a medium.  Combine these with his entrepreneurial spirit in founding Circuitpulse Records and his hunger for improvement and recognition, and it becomes clear that Nanode is a presence that can’t be ignored because he’s done more than many of his contemporaries have at a much younger age than them.  Recently, Nanode stated that he would be moving away from chiptune towards more traditional music composition, but that before doing so, he would release a few more pure chip albums as a sort of farewell to the scene that helped raise him to new heights.

Do these two albums do the young composer justice? Will they leave a mark on the scene worth remembering? Let’s not delay any further. Join me as I dive deep into ‘Voyager’ and ‘Paradise’ to discover if there is truly treasure waiting for us within these new waters.

Kuma’s Quick Shots: Round 20

Hey there, ChipWINners! Welcome back to Quick Shots, my monthly album review column that brings you the latest from the scene to help you determine if something is right for you.  This month, I’ll be reviewing four new albums from friends in the scene that are at different points in their careers.  While some are just getting back in the scene, or are continuing to thrive in it, one is taking their final bow, and leaving us with a parting gift before they move on with their lives.  It’s going to be a bittersweet journey this time, folks.  So take a seat, plug in those headphones, and get ready for a rollercoaster of feels, as we look at music from The Laohu, +Let’s Disinfect+, StarStorm, and BitTrashRiot.

Kuma’s Hype Train #1: Skybox and S.P.R.Y.

Posted by

Hey, what’s up, ChipWINners! Welcome to a new column I like to call Kuma’s Hype Train! This one will be in a similar vein to my Quick Shots articles, in that I’ll be picking apart albums for your listening pleasure. However, what will differentiate Hype Train from Quick Shots is content. Because Hype Train is meant to build anticipation for new releases, articles in this column will, at best, only feature teaser tracks and preview medleys of upcoming projects. Don’t let that get you down, though, because as soon as these albums are released, these articles will be updated to feature links in the descriptions for you to get a hold of the sweet, audible candy for yourselves.

Let’s not waste any more time. Sit back, relax and take a trip into the future with me as I gush over new albums from Skybox and S.P.R.Y.!

In the name of all that's unholy.... (more…)

Stokin’ the Forge: ‘Codex’ EP by Awesome Force

Posted by

Ahoy ChipWINners and a happy February Friday to one and all! I know I want to get psyched up for MAGFest, and this latest release by Sean ‘Awesome Force’ Baker is helping me do just that. Not with fist pumping melodies and foot stomping beats as one might anticipate, but with an ethereal sound with a broad emotional range that flows smoothly across the entire EP. With mastering done by Tri Angles, and contributions from Jason Doss and Auxcide to broaden the pallet, Sean’s talented compositions paint a complex picture. Take the jump past the fold to take a swim through the sound with me.
