Glenntai Got: ‘Selfie USA’ by RobKTA

Posted by

Many people have different inspirations and perspectives on chipmusic, and the emergence of chip elements in modern production was an inevitable expectation in its rise of popularity. We’ve seen and heard many acts expand and continue making music both in and out of the chip community, and today we’re coming across what I’ve always felt was a gem humbly hanging out. Enter RobKTA with ‘Selfie USA’; released with Hyperwave Records. This album is an album that brings you through a wild laser montage as if you’re walking on and around Dotonbori bridge. If you’re not familiar with RobKTA’s delightfully funky aesthetic, get ready for the middle of your week to get that much livelier.

Glenntai Got: ‘MIN – Vignettes of Self Loathing’ by ZBW

A lot of chip music is very direct with its presentation and direction of how to enjoy it. It also happens to play safe within the boundaries brought to us by keys and scales. Because of this, many people don’t exactly know what to expect when they hear the term “avant-garde”. ZBW’s latest, ‘MIN. – Vignettes on Self Loathing’, would be a good starting point if you search for something avant-garde within chiptune. If you want an adventure of someone else’s emotions, follow me after the jump. Or don’t. We all go to the same place.

What can you say about don’tblinkoryou’lldie (fka DBOYD) that hasn’t already been echoed by the community? Highly skilled with sound design and composition, don’tblinkoryou’lldie is a high-energy experience that puts your body and listening skills to work simultaneously with some of the most lush, fleshed-out detail I’ve heard from a Game Boy. If this is your first introduction to don’tblinkoryou’lldie, buckle up and get ready to never blink again in your life.

Glenntai Got Em Português by The J. Arthur Keenes Band

Samba is a music genre that isn’t often heard in the realm of chipmusic. From chords with some complexity to rhythmic layers, I can understand this isn’t the easiest thing to tackle with very limited hardware. While still possible to really capture the spirit of the genre, it needs a wider range of sounds than ones typically provided in either hardware or software. Therefore, of all the artists out there, it makes perfect sense that The J. Arthur Keenes band would come along and provide us with a cover album of their favorite samba songs that’s warm and full of the same quality we’ve all known to expect and love. If you don’t know why that was an exciting statement, it’s time for you to click read more.

Glenntai Got: Business Pastel

2018 has been a good start for chipmusic, and we can easily thank those who released music in the prior year for that. 2017 had some very high-key releases that managed to overshadow many others due to their surge in popularity and the quality of their music being nothing short of top-notch. As a community this is a great “problem” to have, but from an individual artist perspective it can be very tough for new or less-popular acts. If you haven’t listened to it yet, you might accidentally have slept on Business Pastel’s self-titled debut album, which deserves the attention of anyone in chipmusic that enjoys dance music with vibes of electro, future bass, d&b and hints or suggestions of other genres.

Hoodie Highlights… Sam Wray!

Posted by

Sup y’all? =) President Hoodie here with the first Hoodie Highlights of 2016! Woohoo! =D

Getting things rolling along nicely for the new year, today’s feature is with one of my favorite “doers” in chiptune. A young Brit I had the pleasure of finally working with last year, and who has already accomplished more in chiptune than he really has any right to at his age. Of course I’m talking about Sam Wray aka 2xAA! Enjoy!
