The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews ‘2011’ by WMD

Happy October, folks!

Just as the month comes to an end, I bring to you a cool little surprise.  Released on September 29, WMD is combining their ability to create atmospheric sound textures and presenting a record paired with straight up chiptune.  It’s been quite a while since something like this has been released, and judging by the comments on their Bandcamp, I’m not the only one excited about it.

The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews ‘Novum’ by Gesceap

Happy May, everyone!

This month, we were graced by a new Cheapbeats release written and produced by UK electronic artist, Gesceap. Released on May 4th, the seven track album is full of glitchy percussion and hypnotic melodies composed with Nanoloop. With a variety of digital elements comes a strong song structure created from from samples and soft synths. Interestingly enough, this was the first Nanoloop iOS album ever released on Cheapbeats, so on top of the sound being sublime, listeners can hear history unfolding right before their ears.

When I listen to a record, just like how when I make one, I tend to listen and check my mixes on both my studio speakers and headphones. I’m currently on the road and, as I write this, I’m limited to my iPhone speakers. Just from hearing it from this extremely limited audio source, I can say the album’s mixes are done very well. The percussion cuts through perfectly, and the bass holds its own space without creating a centimeter of mud. While an album isn’t just about a great mix, I can honestly say that each track was wonderful to listen to and the album itself was easy to listen to at one time. As a whole, it was unique and beautiful, and I can see why Cheapbeats proudly released it.

For those of you from the west coast of the US and those of you familiar with the Philadelphia chiptune scene and/or MAGFest, the name Auxcide is likely a very familiar to you. Armed with several Gameboy Advance SPs, synthesizers and drum machines, his unique blend of electronic music genres within the media of chipmusic have struck deep emotions as much as it has made people dance. During this summer of excellent releases coming from talented composers, Cheapbeats has given us a treat by releasing Bare Knuckle: a 15-minute live-recorded medley full of music from the Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle/ベア・ナックル series. Yuzo Koshiro has been known for his bouncy, syncopated dance rhythms that combined elements from house, jazz, hip-hop and a variety of EDM genres.  Continue after the jump for some good jams.

The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews ‘[rr009] demi batard’ by Rhythmus Records

Happy Wednesday, folks!

This month, I wanted to shed some light on a local record label, Rhythmus Records, and their newest release ‘[rr009], featuring music by artist Demi Batard. Rhythmus Records was created by Scott Buchanan, also known as Radio Scotvoid. Scott is the perfect person to have run a label focusing solely on lo-fi music, as his own releases showcase his dedication to synthesis and chip. I’ve been working with Rhythmus Records since last year, and have a lot of love for the label. I’ve been able to find a lot of unique artists through it, and believe it’s essential to bring attention to local labels and scenes.  I know RR was very excited about Demi Batard’s release, and given that there isn’t much music quite like his, I think you should be, too.
