Clover Chain Reacts To: Kubbi – ‘Taiga’

Posted by

My introduction is going to be a bit of a gushy personal disclaimer. Sometime in mid-February of 2015, I was chilling out at home browsing Bandcamp, skimming ‘videogame’ tags and fan accountsmy primary way of finding new music back then. I stumbled across Kubbi’s album ‘Ember’, a breathtaking experience that I fall in love with every time I hear it. It’s stuck with me all this time, and while I’m sure it’s influenced me as an artist, Ember has done much more to help shape me as a listener. Looking back, some things have stayed the same (I still spend an occasional evening all to myself on bandcamp), but there’s just so much that has changed since 2015. I discovered Chiptunes = WIN, learned new things. I made new friends, left high school, grew up… and now I find myself here. I know I wouldn’t want to be judged for who I was three years ago, and I certainly wouldn’t want my music to be judged by what I made back then either.

So, as honored as I am to be talking about one of my favorite artists, on one of my favorite blogs – I’m going to try and set that aside, and refrain from any comparisons in regards to Kubbi’s past work too. I’m honestly more excited for right now, and the memories that haven’t happened yet. I used to have one definitive favorite album. With ‘Taiga’, I now have two.

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Graz – ‘Monolith’

Posted by

Hey guys. I’ve been extremely busy these past few months, mainly down to getting the funding secure for Chip Bit Day 18 (which you can read about it later on after the review). Thankfully I’m still finding time to do my reviews for ChipWIN! This month I’m reviewing an album that I’ve been sitting on for a while now; ‘Monolith’ by Graz and released with ‘Ravertooth Tiger’.

The last time I review a Graz album was back in 2016 with ‘Ravepunk’ and that released by ‘Cheapbeats’. It was a great listen whilst feeling incredibly boppy & funky. ‘Monolith’ however is a lot different compared to ‘Ravepunk’, sounding more heavy whilst feeling darker & grittier.

Aydan Appreciates: ‘Crunk Witch’ by Crunk Witch

Posted by

Crunk Witch, an eclectic and eccentric geeky duo from Maine, is known for their heavy bass, explosive vocals, phenomenal production, and chipmusic-influenced style. They’re also known for touring extensively throughout the United States. Several times a year they come through the college town that I call home, Ithaca, to jam out at one of our favorite local pizza joints, The Nines. This is just a pit stop on their journey to rock the nation, and it’s always a treat to experience the sheer energy that flows through the packed bar during their shows. At these live events, they’ve teased some new material from their latest self-titled album, released a little more than four years after their most recent album, ‘Heartbeats in Hyperspace’. ‘Crunk Witch’ is packed with what long-time fans know and love the duo for, and is sure to open new fans’ eyes to their sheer talent. So come on, everybody; there’s a place we gotta go!

Clover Chain Reacts To: Tenfour – ‘Wish Book’

Posted by

When it came out, Tenfour’s “Wish Book” marked something wonderfully new for Cheapbeats. A popular label for chiptune and lo-fi music, this is the first time in my memory they’ve released something so distinctly modern and inspired more by videogame music than the chip scene. Soundtracks, and VGM in general, were my entryway to taking an interest in composition, which led me to the Chiptunes=WIN community, so I’m going to take this opportunity to try something new myself and write out my thoughts about it. Because this isn’t just a phenomenal album, it’s also *right* up my alley. Let’s dissect why it works so well.

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: A Look Into Chip Bit Day 2018 & Its Artists!

Posted by

Instead of doing your standard review, I thought I’d do something a little different. At the moment I’ve been extremely busy raising the funds for Chip Bit Day 2018. Yes, Manchester’s latest chiptune event is back for it’s 3rd year, and I’m looking to build upon the foundations laid by the last two to create an even better night – or should I say nights?!?

ChipWIN-tern Spotlight: ‘PLAYROOM VOL 6’ from Toy Company

Posted by

It’s time to turn the spotlight this month to the far frozen northlands of Canada – Toy Company has put out volume six of its compilation series and let me tell you, if you’re not already sitting down to prepare yourself for this I’m going to need you to do so. I’d try to use modern parlance and say things like “this album slaps, my guy” or “this album is full of bangers” but I’m officially old enough to be out of touch with modern slang, let alone to know if what I consider modern slang actually is or if it’s already old by the time it reaches my ears. But look – sit down, put your overpriced headphones on and get ready for a ride.
