Sooooooo, what was going to be a week-long series of social media posts giving brief historical context on five years of our compilation series (a little hype leading up to Friday’s V.6 launch if you will) just turned into a week-long series of blog posts featuring such. Why? Simple: there’s no word limit here. ಠ‿↼ And boy howdy, can I write a lot about this gorram project; especially this core facet of it.
Keyboardist, composer, and chipmusician Yoann Turpin has seen a number of his works featured in the ChipWIN community, be it his submission to the ChipWINter compilation, 2014’s ‘FriendChip’, or 2015’s ‘Chip Songbook Vol. 6’. His music is known throughout our niche for its funky vibes, his phenomenal work on the keys, and jazzy, improvisational solos that’re all ingredients for truly gorgeous music. His latest release, ‘Random Smash Hits’, is a collection of three short weeks’ worth of Turpin’s aural artwork. As if the sheer quantity of music he’s released in the last two years wasn’t enough to turn heads, the speed with which this album was composed and mastered is astounding.
So let’s see what chiptune chart-topping pieces lie in wait!
Many of us will be celebrating the holidays this year, in some fashion or another. Tradition can be a truly wonderful thing, whether it’s travelling to see friends and family, picking out a Christmas tree, giving gifts to your loved ones, or…releasing albums??? This year marks the second winter in a row that Professor Shyguy, best known throughout our lovely community for his enthralling voice and lyrical prowess, has graced us with the gift of music. Almost every tune on this album should be recognizable in seconds, but the Prof puts his own spin on each of these classic Christmas tunes, which makes for a heartwarming welcome to this otherwise blustering, bitter season (especially to us in the Northeast!). So gather round, grab a cup of hot chocolate, and let the soothing sounds of the Professor bring you warmth!
