Chris Considers: ‘Out Of Memory’ by Zalza

Posted by

Greetings, ChipWINners! It’s good to be back on the blog with a phenomenal new album to review. While others may ponder what future 2017 has in store, we chiptune fans have a particular proclivity to maintain a strong sense of reverence and respect for the past. There is no other recent release that exemplifies this ideal better than ‘Out Of Memory’ by Zalza.

‘Out Of Memory’ is a tribute to humanity’s achievements through the exponential growth of technology, focusing on the exciting period of time from the late 70’s to the early 90’s when the personal computer rapidly grew from a compelling oddity into an essential, multi-billion dollar industry. Throughout the album, Zalza makes use of vintage computer documentaries reporting on “something referred to as technology”, guided programming tutorials, and giddy new PC owners who “just installed the Internet on their computer”. It’s a thematic construct that is at times humorous, but always intensely inspirational. This theme is all the more authentic coming from an artist who tinkered and toiled his way through those halcyon days himself. Let’s take a closer look at just a few of the excellent tracks from ‘Out Of Memory’.

Chris Considers: ‘Technokinesis’ by Meganeko

Greetings to you all, fans of chiptune! The last few weeks have been an exciting time in the chiprealm, as we’ve seen the triumphant return of some beloved artists within the scene whose next releases have been hotly anticipated: Tri Angles, Electric Children, and Meganeko, just to name a few. I first discovered the supremely talented Swede, Meganeko’s, music through the Chiptune + Charity Bundle #4 back in early 2014. The included album was his debut, ‘Robot Language’, which remains one of my favorite and most impressive debut albums to this day.

Meganeko’s music hooks you with the perfect hybrid blend of hard-hitting drum & bass and beautifully carefree melodies that you didn’t know you needed until the moment they hit your eardrums. I can remember Meganeko posting at the time that bundle was live how thrilled and honored he was to be featured in a bundle alongside artists such as Shirobon, and here we are a few years later and he’s just released ‘Technokinesis’, his most killer EP yet, on Shirobon’s netlabel Hyperwave Records! Continuing in the ChipWIN tradition of always moving onward and upward; seeing and hearing these artists collaborate, grow and inspire one another is what makes me love this music scene so much. Hit the jump for a few examples of why ‘Technokinesis’ is a cyberpunk thrillride that deserves your attention.

Chris Considers: ‘Galaxies Collide’ by Sparky+

Greetings to you all, fans of chiptune. A heartfelt thank you goes out to all of the artists who have submitted a track for consideration for ChipWIN: Vol. 5! As Hoodie and the rest of the judges undertake the difficult task of preparing the album for release, I’d like to highlight a recently released EP that has caught my attention, ‘Galaxies Collide’ by New Jersey-based chiptune artist Sparky+ (Bruce Gil). Sparky+ has been releasing a  steady stream of straight-up lsdj bitpop tunes with a driving house beat for about a year now. In ‘Galaxies Collide’, Sparky+ has expanded the scope of his soundscape through the use of a midi tracker. This delightful and catchy selection of tracks is wrapped up in a galactic theme, which I’m always a sucker for. Hit the jump as we go ‘Beyond’…

Chris Considers: ‘Gravity’ by Demoscene Time Machine

Posted by

The music of Berlin-based David Whiting, aka Demoscene Time Machine, takes me back to those wondrous days when I was a fresh-faced kid experiencing the magic of the early internet. After a quick Altavista search, I was acquiring games from sketchy warez websites with reckless abandon. Upon launching them, I was greeted with flashy intro screens with wiggly rainbow text set against incredible chipmusic that blew away what I was hearing from my NES at the time. I’d often find myself spending more time hanging on these intro screens than I would spend actually playing the game. Years later, I’ve come to realize that what I was experiencing was the fruits of the early demoscene, which kicked off what the overall chiptune scene has exploded into today. In ‘Gravity’, Demoscene Time Machine pays loving tribute to those glory days while also utilizing modern music production techniques, and wrapping it all up in a space theme with a strong musical narrative. Hit the jump to explore this stellar new chiptune album!

Chris Considers: ‘Black’ by Zan

Posted by

There’s more than one reason to get hyped about the album that I’m reviewing this month, chipfam. Not only is ‘Black’ by Russian chiptune artist Zan a killer new release in its own right, but it also marks the launch of an exciting new chiptune netlabel, • Forest •! Yes, the founder of Forest Booking, Alexander Agri, has recently leveled up from booking agency to full-blown netlabel and joined forces with none other than Kubbi to begin releasing awesome chipmusic to the world. In addition, ‘Black’ features Twistboy (now going by the name Purely Grey), who takes turns with Zan remixing each other’s tracks on the latter half of the album. I’ve expressed my love for both Kubbi and Twistboy’s music in previous blog posts, and to see their paths cross for an album in this way was more than enough to pique my interest. After hearing ‘Black’ by Zan, I think you’ll agree that this is one hell of a kickass release, and look forward to what • Forest • puts out in the future.
