This Month in The Overworld: Kenobit

Posted by

Is there something like a Chiptune Maestro? This month’s artist, Kenobit, a.k.a Fabio Bortolotti, could definitely be defined as one. Self proclaimed Game Boy addict, he has been working on his masterful and dynamic tracks for over 9 years, and has certainly become an integral figure of the chipmusic community in Milan, Italy.

Fabio was born in Italy, in the year 1982. After playing drums in a few punk bands in his teens, he discovered chiptune at a show in a small club. He instantly fell in love, bought an LSDJ cart, and never stopped producing chiptune.

The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews The ‘Posthuman’ Video by Conquer Monster

Posted by

Happy December, folks!

Back in November of 2015, I had the pleasure of talking with Joshua Faulkner and Daniel Romero of the Salt Lake City super synth duo known as Conquer Monster. Their album, ‘Metatransit‘, had just been released the previous month in October, and on top of being incredibly sound design savvy with a variety of instruments, synthesizers, and a C64 on their album the group also performs live and focuses a good portion of their time on reeling listeners in with visuals. Debuting on December 11, 2017, the group has taken one of their tracks ‘Posthuman’ from ‘Metatransit’ and created a retro video featuring the artists in a 90s point-and-click inspired video game.

What’s On Tap – Jellica

Posted by

Welcome to the fall edition of What’s On Tap! Cooler weather pairs nicely with cool tunes and the first fall seasonal beers this month – let’s rock!

Cambridge-based musician Jellica is a veteran of the chip scene, having released 14+ EP/LP online, running the Kittenrock netlabel, and performing live both in the United Kingdom and abroad. Jellica’s style is somewhat fluid between releases, moving deftly between various genres of electro-pop oriented sounds.

Released on August 31st, Jellica’s newest offering ‘Retrotech Romance’ is a masterclass in SID sounds, with dual Commodore 64 chips pumping out waves of intense textures and funky rhythms. An interesting aspect of this album is that it takes time – each track is at least 4:00 long and all evolve organically rather than using a standard verse/chorus approach. In the style of the American minimalist composers Philip Glass/Terry Riley/John C. Adams, musical events unfold over a series of minutes rather than seconds. Sometimes these are small nudges to the musical orbit rather than colossal impacts; the addition of a higher set of accompanying blips or a 7-tone melody that unfolds over twenty seconds. In our current environment of 140-character snippets, ‘Retrotech Romance’ closes out the summer with a marathon session of electronic jams.

Paul’s Pantry – ‘Titan’ by Alex Lane

Posted by

Hello everyone and thank you for reading The ChipWIN Blog! Today we’re going to review ‘Titan’ another great Cheapbeats release, and the second full-length album by Austral-English chip legend Alex Lane!

I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Alex two years ago at Eindbaas, in Utrecht, NL. We were set to play the pre-party open stage, it was our first ever show abroad, let alone in such an important event, and we were super stressed out. Then, this round-faced guy comes up with a BEAMING smile and says hi. Stress was lifted. We hit it off instantly. Alex has the reputation of being the Nicest Guy In Chiptune™ and to be honest, I couldn’t fault anyone for thinking that. My point is, don’t be surprised if this review comes off as a little ♥biased♥. I like Alex a lot as a person. But holy moly do I love him as a musician.

Chip Bit Sid Takes on: TRUTHR – ‘Self titled’

Posted by

Hey guys, it’s been a while but I’m back and I’m reviewing Henry Homesweet’s latest inclination, ‘TRUTHR‘ and his self titled EP. I’ve been a huge fan of Henry Homesweet and his music, ever since he released his album, ‘Luke’s Atari’, and have since been following any music released under both his primary pseudonym and the various other names he’s released material under (e.g: 2a0xCYMBA, Essential Chip, Yeon).
