Paul’s Tech Talk – LSDJ 5.1.0, Civil War Part 2: The new L command, and KICKS

Posted by

Hello all and thank you for reading The ChipWIN Blog!

In the last issue of this column, we tackled the infamous 5.1.0 LSDJ update and dwelled on the theory of what it brought to the table. To cut it short, it all boiled down to a complete redesign of Pitch behaviour. What the community did not expect, was all the ramifications and ripples it would have, and it ended up being a highly controversial update, to which many would actually choose to turn a blind eye.

If you haven’t already, I suggest reading the first part of this article before delving into this one, just to get familiar with what’s at stake. In this second part, I will first spend some time going over the specifics of the all-new L command also introduced in 5.1.0. Then I will go over how I view the anatomy of Kicks. And then, finally, I will try to get more practical, and give several examples of how to work with LSDJ 5.1.0 and above to utilize all these new features to the fullest.

Let’s dive in!

How to WIN at Chiptune!

Episode 0: A little about me

Hello! Auracle here, and this is How To WIN At Chiptune, my first contribution to The ChipWIN Blog! I’ve been helping out around the Facebook group as a moderator for a while, so it’s great to increase my responsibilities a little further! The goal of this weekly series is to equip you to become a more active and involved part of your local chiptune community, and to help bring chiptune out of tiny basement clubs and niche conventions.  To be clear, “win” doesn’t mean global fame and fortune; it means the ability to realise your vision and do the things that make you happy! I’m proud of the part I’ve played in the growth of my city’s scene (Manchester, UK) along with my friends at GameFace and I’d like to share some of that useful experience with you. Before we jump in, let me tell you a little about myself and how I got to this point. Context! ⊂((・▽・))⊃

Hoodie Highlights… Alexander Brandon!

Posted by

Sup y’all? =) President Hoodie here bringing back my Hoodie Highlights interview column after a couple months off. Even I get a break every now and then, right? (^_−)−☆

For my return to the blog, I’m bringing both a very special guest in Alexander Brandon, a name that needs little to no introduction in and around our collective of collectives, as well a new focal point for at least the next few interviews I’m conducting: mental health.

It’s a very important topic that I feel we don’t discuss near enough publicly, especially in and around our scenes, which are brimming full of creative, often unique individuals. There’s a pervasive cultural stigma regarding mental health, and it’s one that needs to be done away with posthaste. Talking about it more often is one way to help facilitate that.

With that said, let’s get to talking!

Hoodie Highlights… Andrew Kilpatrick [again]!

Sup y’all? =) President Hoodie back again with another of my Hoodie Highlights interviews! Due to crazy life happenings (i.e. getting MARRIED <3 ), it’s been a few months since I’ve had the time to manage one of these enjoyable talks. And what better way to bring the feature back than with a follow-up chat with my good snarky Brit friend & initial Hoodie Highlights focus, Andrew Kilpatrick? Read along as we talk all retrospective-like, as Kilpatrick brings his 5+ years of awesome chiptune contributions to a close. Enjoy!

Bit by Bit: Advice for Aspiring Artists

Posted by

Welcome, friends, to a new article segment I’ve been putting together. Unlike most of my work on The ChipWIN Blog and my writings with Nerdfit, I wanted to address some things that I’ve seen plaguing many new and promising artists. I do this in the hope that those new folks will realize that their problems, much like many new artists’ problems, are not only common but solvable.  If you’re new, relatively new, or just having issues with thinking that you’ll ever make a great track, join me for a monthly pick-me-up in Bit by Bit!

Bit By Bit copy"Glenn I know this is more of an intro article, but you need to have
an image in there somewhere."
Is that so?  Well then, loophole achieved. On with the content.
