Kuma’s Quick Shots: Round 18

Posted by

Hey there, ChipWINners! Welcome back to Quick Shots: the album review column in which I break down the finer points of some of the latest releases in the scene, then give you a numerical TL;DR to help you determine if a record is right for you.  This month, I have two albums up for review that explore spaces I’ve yet to discuss on the blog.  One is a metal album that incorporates vocals via the Hatsune Miku Vocaloid software, and has incredibly powerful lyrics.  The other is an album from an accomplished pianist who has composed a very stirring concept album using the tracker software in the Pico-8 virtual console.  Both albums albums caught me off guard and have a lot to offer their respective audiences.  That said, let’s not waste anymore time! Sit back, relax, and plug in those headphones as I take the time to review the latest from 8-Bit Hero and Gruber.

Aydan Appreciates: ‘Unknown Command’ by Dr. Zilog

Posted by

I’ll be honest, Dr. Zilog wasn’t a name I was familiar with. In all my years in the chipscene, the Doctor’s work hasn’t once crossed my path, and if it had, I just hadn’t really paid any mind to it. Regardless, while browsing through my Instagram feed, I noticed the particularly sick album art for his most recent release, ‘Unknown Command’, and was immediately intrigued. As I realized what I’d been missing out on, regret flowed through my veins like a river of quicksilver. The sheer intensity and virtuosity of this artist dazzled me beyond belief from the very first moment I began to listen to ‘Unknown Command’. How so? Why don’t we delve into the depths of this chipmetal suite and find out?

Office Hours – Danimal Cannon ‘Lunaria’

Posted by

For the March installment of Office Hours I have the distinct pleasure of reviewing the just-released ‘Lunaria’ by Danimal Cannon. This album is exciting to me on several levels, as I first discovered Danimal shortly after learning LSDJ. His Youtube videos of guitar + Game Boy showed me the incredible potential of chip music and helped inspire me to get started making my own. I am also excited to hear new music from him, as 2013’s superb ‘Parallel Processing’ collaboration with Zef feels like an eternity ago!

If you are reading this blog about chip music, it is unlikely that you need an introduction to Danimal Cannon. His shredding guitar blends seamlessly with the Game Boy, providing both melodic and solo material as well as rhythm accompaniment when the pulse and wave channels are pushed to their limit. He has performed shows with Metroid Metal, Armcannon, Weaponex, and solo around the country and abroad. Finally, prior to the official release of ‘Lunaria’, President Hoodie published an interview with Danimal Cannon – it contains several interesting insights into the composition of this album, and should not be missed!

Hoodie Highlights… Danimal Cannon!

Sup y’all? =) Pres Hoodie here, somehow still alive post-MAGFest 2016 (damn, that was a crazy, wonderful adventure!). In the aftermath of such, I’m bringing you an interview with a cool cat that I’ve been acquainted with since my very first MAGFest (MAG 9). It also happens to be the event where he got his start performing live chipmusic. There’s a pretty good chance you’ve heard of him and his imminent sophomore album, ‘Lunaria’. Yup, of course I’m talking about Dan Behrens aka Danimal Cannon! Enjoy!

Revengineers is a name familiar to numerous Northeastern chipmusic fans, and while the group may not be the most active, their music is extremely indicative of the state that chiprock is in at this point in time. Nick Maynard, a member of the Revengineers, has released an album under his solo alias ‘LITTLE PAW’ entitled ‘SPACE CORGI’, which blends indie rock and chipmusic to create a thing of beauty. A danceable fusion of indie rock and chipmusic, the album is a joyous adrenaline rush from start to finish. Let’s dive in and see what ‘SPACE CORGI’ has in store for us!
