A Square Meal: ‘カワイイチップチューン VS カッコイイチップチューン 対決コンピレーション’ (Cute vs. Cool Chiptune)

Posted by

Confrontation is, occasionally, inevitable. Most of the time, however, we can learn from our differences and enrich our own perspective. In some cases, even highlighting these contrasting elements can be a good thing. After a spectacular showcase compilation last year, しのりゅー brings to us yet another incredible release that showcases this pixelated dichotomy. For this chapter, 56 artists explored the contrasting themes of cute and cool in their own unique styles. So let’s take a look over ‘カワイイチップチューン VS カッコイイチップチューン 対決コンピレーション’ (Kawaii Chippchūn VS Kakkoii Chippchūn: Taiketsu Conpirēshon), released through novtos.

Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 8 [Tracks 31 – 40]

Everyone has a high-pitched scream reserved for something, and I have to confess I had one especially loud waiting for this moment. That’s right; the time has come for me to write about some quality tunes. So let’s put the long introduction aside and let’s take a look over ‘Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 8’, tracks 31 to 40.

ChipWIN-tern Spotlight: The Yamaha YM2612 & You!

Posted by

If we’re really honest with ourselves, there are certain kinds of chiptune that are more visible than others. If I walked up to a random Joe at MAGFest and asked who their favorite chiptune musician was, I’ll bet dollars to donuts that they’d bring up an artist known for either Game Boy or NES music, or if they’re over the age of 30 they might mention some demoscene artists and their love of the Commodore 64.  But unless you really go looking for it, it seems like it’s hard to find anyone making music on the venerable Sega Genesis, or at the very least made with the YM2612 soundchip. It seems that way – but nothing could be farther from the truth. I’d like to take a few minutes and bring to light some real gems out there of an under appreciated console and, if you’re inspired by the end of it, give you the tools you’ll need to make your own original content to take to the club.

8-Bit Banter with DjjD: Toni Leys – ‘Blast Processor’

Posted by

As I first came to know of Toni through ‘Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 3‘, his first impression was a lasting one. I can count at least on 50 different occasions showing that track specifically to friends (who were really never too keen on electronic music in general) that there’s a lot that can be done in the genre. While most just turn towards popular artists and whatever is blaring on the radio, it’s amazing what you can find with just a little research. Now, being a part of this community, I guess it eases the amount of sifting through unpleasant tracks because, by and large, this place is filled with talented musicians and amazing composers. We come here to hear new tunes but we stay for the wealth of knowledge that gets passed around. Now then, ladies and gentlemen, I present Toni Leys.

Toni Leys - Blast Processor - cover

With a cover like that, you can tell at least one of two things.

Number #1: This guy knows his Genesis commercials.

Number #2: He likes the YM2612 soundchip (a lot).

Kuma’s Quick Shots: Round 12

Posted by

Hey ChipWINners! Welcome back to Quick Shots! I hope Thanksgiving treated you well for those of you who got to celebrate, and for those who weren’t able to I hope this belated musical gift more than makes up for your lack of feasting this year. This time around, I’ll be reviewing two EPs that will pull on your heart strings in ways unexpected. These two albums will not only stir the soul and leave you feeling wistful and introspective, but they will also fill you with the determination necessary to close out the year in a way that’s meaningful to you.

So let’s not waste any time! Sit back, plug in those headphones, and lie down on the ground as I make you feel like garbage with two lovely albums from The Flight Away and Sam_Berrow.
