Glenntai Got: ‘Am Happy’ by Pulsing

Posted by

With two releases in the same month you would expect this to be the latter of a two-part series. Even so, ‘Am Happy’ is Pulsing’s debut on Japan-based international net label Cheapbeats. Pulsing, a trio based out of Illinois, brings live guitar and drums into their pieces to create a raw energy that feels like a mix between harder grunge and the early works of fellow chip band from France, Please Lose Battle. What we get as a result is an upbeat album full of heavy guitar, melodic exposition and accompanying arp blips; one of the first ways I could describe it was as ‘a manic pixie dream-rock concert’. If that sounds like a fun time to you, keep reading after the jump for some examples.

Wounds and Resolutions: Curious Quail – ‘Twelve Months’

Posted by

Curious Quail’s ‘Twelve Months’ opens with a simple, quiet guitar chord, E major. A single pulse plays, E, the tonic, a perfect resolution in isolation.

The gameboy falters, falling down until it reaches a B. Perfect fifth. The next best thing.

For the first minute, each phrase ends in one of these two notes.

This song is titled ‘Resolutions’.

“a collection of twelve songs about life, love, loss, beauty, and so much more told through a canvas of hasty melodic decisions and instrumentation that you don’t often get together”

Clover Chain Reacts to: Impulses – ‘L | \/ E’

Posted by

Impulses’ Bandcamp description is simply “Emotional Underground Chiptune.” Started by Trevor Stafford at least a few years ago, their music is consistently calming, pretty, melodic, natural, and always makes me feel things. I haven’t stopped listening since I discovered them last month through the ChipWIN discord. Impulses’ sound is filled with the sincerity of 8-bit synths, and the occasional boppy modernity of edm, and I’ve enjoyed going through their full discography quite a bit. That being said, the latest release ‘L | \/ E EP’ easily stands out, with a polished cohesion, tightness, and clarity.

Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 7 [Tracks 41-51]

THIS IS IT. We’ve come up to the last ten tracks of Volume 7, and I can’t begin to express the rollercoaster of emotion that was experiencing this album without being able to share the hype with everyone in our Discord channel during the release party.

Fortunately, I have a platform where I can have opinions regardless of how right or wrong I can be (thanks, Internet! <3), so without further ado, it’s time to jump into the first track on my list to cover!

Glenntai Got: ‘Stray Dogs’ by Zanate

Posted by

Loss; it’s not just a meme based off someone’s webcomic. It’s a legitimate experience for all of us (no matter whether you feel it or not).  It can cause all sorts of reactions, most of them being rather typical from what we have seen and heard in many forms of media. With Zanate’s ‘Stray Dogs’, however, we experience it through the eyes of the artist experiencing it first-hand with the loss of their dog named Bruno. Using 2A03+VRC6 via Famitracker and their experience with rock instrumentation, we can walk through the goodbye and tribute to a good boy. Get ready to have a mix of feelings when you throw on this seven-track album.
