Clover Chain Reacts To: ‘Nascens’ by meganeko

Posted by

My friend was on TV recently. He was shopping at a bookstore, and the local news was doing a segment on reading, interviewing customers there. When asked to “talk about your favorite book”, he panicked, grabbing the first book that came to his mind: ‘The Crying of Lot 49’, a mere 160 page novella. Now, the interview went fine; he talked about its good writing and such. Upon relaying this story to me, however, my friend expressed regret. He told me it really is one of his favorites, and it’s surprising to find so much value in a pretty short book, and he wishes he could have pointed that out. He’d say something like, “It’s a really small book that says a lot of big ideas.”

meganeko’s ‘Nascens’ is one of my favorite music releases. It’s full of originality. It surprises me. Yes it’s short, but it’s a small EP that shows a lot of big ideas.

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Classic Mistake – ‘Geothermal’

Posted by

For this month I’ve been really busy with a variety of different chiptune projects, and so I’m doing a reblog of an Article I wrote back in early 2018.  ‘Classic Mistake’ is a an artist I’ve only recently come across, beginning with a cover of 0F Digital’s, ‘Mesh’ and featured in ‘The Great Australian Barbecue Bash’ compilation. What I liked about ‘Classic Mistake’ is that he almost exclusively uses ‘Nanoloop 2.0’, creating some fantastic hooks which are reminiscent to early techno. ‘Geothermal’ is Classic Mistake’s first album released under ‘Cheapbeats’. Below I have selected three tracks that stood out for me of ‘Geothermal’.

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Villainest – A Vision of Light

Whilst everyone is engaged with the Chiptunes = WIN compilation over August, one of 2018’s greatest chip albums has just been released; ‘A Vision of Light’ by Canadian 16bit based band, ‘Villainest’. It’s been a while since their last album, ‘A Good Day to Try Hard’ was brought to my attention, much to critical acclaim. I reviewed it on ChipWIN, giving it high praise, also rating track ‘The Machine’ as one of my ‘Top 10 songs of 2017’. ‘A Good Day To Try Hard’ was a great introduction to an already incredible band, however it is nothing when to compared to their latest release ‘A Vision of Light’. How you may ask? Let’s find out through a few tracks that picked my fancy.

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Kitty On Fire Records – Super Duper Digi-Punk Split Vol.4

Posted by

This week instead of the normal chipmusic that I usually review, I thought we’d look at something slightly different with the latest compilation by ‘Kitty On Fire Records’. For those who haven’t heard of them, ‘Kitty On Fire Records’ is a net label that releases all things Heavy electronic. This includes the genres associated with chiptune, such as ‘Nintendocore’, ‘Anime Breakcore’, ‘Glitch’, ‘Digital Hardcore’ and many more. I’ve been following ‘Kitty On Fire’ for a while now, with my biggest purchase being the cassette edition of this album.

This is forth installment of the compilation, which features 1-2 tracks from several artists across the world. For this release I’ll be reviewing three mind shattering tracks that really hooked me.

Aydan Appreciates: ‘started commuting’ by Ello Costello

Posted by

Hey there, ChipWINners. It’s been a few months since I’ve written an article due to some extremely time-occupying life events, but I’m happy to be back now! At the end of May, Cheapbeats released an EP showcasing a new artist in the community named Ello Costello. This artist certainly isn’t a stranger to producing music; he’s released a few EPs independently prior to this, such as the freely composed ‘Just For Fun‘ and the environmentally influenced ‘Small Windows‘. With influence and assistance from DonutShoes, an artist who’s been featured on ‘ChipWIN: Volume 5‘ and on ‘Volume 6‘, Ello Costello makes his stunning debut in our niche with ‘started commuting’. Throughout this EP, Ello Costello draws influence from morning cityscapes, the excitement of travel, and his own musical interests. Let’s see what this release has in store for us!

A little over a month ago, Chiptunes4Autism released their highly anticipated ‘Volume 3: Forces of Neurodivergence’ compilation. Spanning around an hour and a half, the album is part of an ongoing fundraising nonprofit run by Gustuf Young (Asperkraken), focused on promoting autism positivity, and empowering people on the spectrum. Uniting a diverse group of chiptune artists from all around the world, with all kinds of backgrounds, Chiptunes4Autism organizes live showcases and a yearly compilation album. The earnings are donated to a few different causes that support opportunities, advocacy, and resources – all while giving musicians, neurodiverse or otherwise, a helpful and accepting community in the process.
