A Square Meal: The SOUNDSHOCK Series

Posted by

Beyond all the glamour and pageantry of the blips & blops, a misunderstood way of making chip music has grown and bloomed away from the spotlight of the scene – yes I’m talking about FM Synthesis. Of course, this is not a complaint, as we say in Spanish: “para gustos los colores”. The point is that, most of the time, a lot of cool things happen under the surface, things that are worth talking about and, from time to time, seem to be buried in the huge mass of crunchy sounds. The album series I’m covering today is not that. I can even say that it’s well known by everyone nowadays, precisely because the intention was –and still is– to direct your attention to the music and techniques used by those incredible musicians. Today I want to go back to one of the greatest compilation series centered on the FM side of the Micro Music, Demoscene, and Chiptune. Apt for newcomers and veterans, it will make you move and ignite the fires of love and interest in this particular approach to chip music in your soul – hoping the inferno grows so big that it encourages you to search for new music or even make your own. So let’s take a look over the ‘SOUNDSHOCK’ Series by Ubiktune.

A Square Meal: ‘Insert Disk 02’ by Game Genie Sokolov

Posted by

Since the beginning, humanity has had some epic arguments about just the most important, finest and serious topics: why are we here? Good or evil? Should the pizza be topped with pineapple? And of course: does Sega really do what NintenDoesn’t? Well, I won’t intend nor dare to give an answer to any of the previously mentioned questions (especially to the last one); but if you are up for some quality FM Chiptune, today’s article is going to completely blow your mind.

From all the options we have to listen and appreciate chiptune nowadays, it’s always nice to find some first-rate music made specifically to be played on a Sega Genesis. That’s why when I knew that there was a Montreal artist who makes it, I got myself ready for an incredible experience. Of course I’m talking about Game Genie Sokolov. Maybe you remember GG Sokolov’s tremendous work from ‘Chiptunes = WIN Vol. 5’, ‘Deskpop & ChipWIN’ or ‘FM: Possible 2‘; but this time we’ll talk about this new and super awe-inspiring album: ‘Insert Disk 02’ released through the French Canadian netlabel Lisbon Lux Records. So let’s take a look over it… Sega style!

ChipWIN-tern Presents: YM2017

Howdy-ho friends! Newcomers to the blog might not know about the soft spot I have for FM synthesis, but rest assured that any time I get a chance to talk about someone doing cool chiptunes on the Genesis (or any of the other myriad ways someone might achieve that around these parts), I jump at the chance!  If you add in someone doing something for the good of the community, well, let me tell you, there aren’t many better ways to brighten my day. A few weeks ago, David DeGraw, an enterprising purveyor of fine Game Boy audio accessories, announced that he was putting together a compilation for tunes to play on the Sega Genesis and Nomad.  I took some time to interview him, and without further ado, I’d like to tell you all about the YM2017 compilation project hitting your vintage Sega consoles this August!

The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews ‘Decent Company’ by Catthew O., AKA Bubblegum Octopus.

Posted by

Happy May, folks!

This month, I chose to shed some light on an album hosting home to 26 tracks called ‘Decent Company’, created by a New Jersey based artist, releasing under the moniker of ‘Catthew O.’. Also known as ‘Bubblegum Octopus‘, Catthew O. prepared a wonderfully eclectic final product containing music created specifically for Weekly Beats.

Weakly Beats, which was recently held in 2016, is an online site that previously allowed composers to upload original music once a week, every week, for the entirety of the year. While I did not personally participate in WB, I found it to be a great forum for creativity and I do hope it opens up again in the next year to come; it’s a fantastic place for musicians to congregate, and outcomes like ‘Decent Company’ are always fantastic to come by.

ChipWIN-tern Spotlight: ‘The Frequency Modulators Orchestra Vol. 1’ by Amplitude Problem

We all like solo projects, right? They’re always cool.  Someone who’s been doing their thing as a part of a group or a series of collaborations gets to do their own thing.  They give themselves the opportunity to open up the throttle and do what they really want to do. Lo and behold, I have such an offering for you! The latest release on Ubiktune, ‘The Frequency Modulators Orchestra Vol. 1’ by Amplitude Problem, is the newest project from demoscene veteran Juan Irming.

What’s On Tap – Norrin_Radd

Posted by

Hello and welcome to the October edition of ‘What’s on Tap?’ Your host is very excited about this month’s pairing as they are two of my favorite things – new music by Norrin_Radd and the double IPA. Both of these selections push the envelope of their style and are unique, intense experiences. I hope you enjoy them as much as I do!

Matt Creamer is the mad genius behind the moniker Norrin_Radd, and his music has been influential to me in the years since I first heard his album ‘Anomaly’. His musical style tends to lean towards progressive rock and thrash metal, with plenty of complicated riffs and sudden mood shifts. Matt takes plenty of musical risks that usually pay off; where other artists might not explore such diversity in a short track, his music always seems to have a coherent trajectory.

The soundtrack for ‘Treasure Buster’ benefits from this approach, as most of the tracks are well under two minutes and still manage to cover a wide array of musical territory. ‘Treasure Buster’ is a game for iOS (and Android soon) developed by Reggie Schrieber with Pixel Licker Studios, described as ‘Zelda 1 meets pinball’ in the style of 90’s Capcom arcade games. While this review covers the music, I highly encourage you to follow this link to read more about the game and check out the videos!
