This month’s featured artist was born and raised in East Fresia, Germany. Which is a small coastal region, very close to the border with the Netherlands, and famous for its tea culture. Keno, a.k.a. Vault Kid has a long record of creating EDM jams that goes back all the way to 2012, and through his college years this habit remained strong. Suddenly, in 2016, the event of finding out about Chiptune changed his creative path forever. Let’s hear what this producer of catchy tunes has to say about our beloved music style.

We all love our chipmusic here on the blog. Many of us are familiar with the various kinds of hardware, software, and their unique sounds, be they the NES, the Genesis, the Game Boy, or some other kind of emulator with the express purpose of creating the tones we all know and love. But did you know that the future bass subgenre of electronic dance music is actually in a similar vein to chipmusic by extension? Future bass music is often loosely tied to VGM and chipmusic, and is defined predominantly by its use of synthesizers that are commonplace in all three of these scenes. Today, we’ll be looking at the latest Snail’s House release, ‘Snö’; something that’s particularly notable about this release is the difference in tone between this EP and the majority of Snail’s House’s previous works. Most of this artist’s pieces are high-energy, utilizing a multitude of voices and aggressive percussion to create wild, jazzy tunes, ‘Snö’, on the other hand, is more subdued and calm in nature, sounding something like a soundtrack from a futuristic RPG, but with emotional overtones. Without further ado, let’s see what ‘Snö’ has in store for us.
Hey ChipWINners, and welcome back to Quick Shots: the monthly album review column that helps you determine if some of the latest offerings from the scene are worth diving into. This month, I’ve decided that instead of presenting you with work from a splattering of artists across the spectrum, I’m going to focus on just one artist: Nanode.
Nanode is a young, jovial composer who has made quite a splash since joining the scene. From his pulse pounding, stylish music to his reputation as a purveyor of memes; his contributions to The ChipWIN Blog to his role as a panel host at MAGFest, Sam Sher is representative of the longevity and potential chiptune has a scene and as a medium. Combine these with his entrepreneurial spirit in founding Circuitpulse Records and his hunger for improvement and recognition, and it becomes clear that Nanode is a presence that can’t be ignored because he’s done more than many of his contemporaries have at a much younger age than them. Recently, Nanode stated that he would be moving away from chiptune towards more traditional music composition, but that before doing so, he would release a few more pure chip albums as a sort of farewell to the scene that helped raise him to new heights.

I can appreciate an artist who gravitates towards a persona for his or her music, but gathering 2-3 different pseudonyms for yourself, takes skill. Not only do you have to maintain each one of these on a regular basis, but you have to separate yourself from….yourself to generate compositions for the correlating genres for each name. Such is the case of Snareskin (a.k.a. froxic, conceptor). Whatever you wanna call him, there’s no denying he has a unique ability to blend the chill and smooth with the loud and aggressive.
