A Square Meal: ‘あじたま見聞録’ by 梅干茶漬け

Posted by

Greetings! I’m Pixel Guy. When I was beginning my way on the fantastic world of chipmusic a few years ago, everything seemed to be so surreal. The ambience, the people, the hardware and techniques; it was like an anachronistic dream.

It was back then when I first knew about Chiptunes = WIN and listened to Volume 4 for the very first time. I can say that my life changed after those 3+ hours of music and that was, to a greater extent, thanks to all the marvelous artists on that compilation. One of them, 梅干茶漬け (Umeboshi Chazuke), made a really stunning creation and got my attention from the first second. When the track, and with it the compilation, was over; I was truly amazed with all the music I’d just heard. I wanted more, so I searched and listened to more content from a huge majority of all the artists that were on that Volume, and I kept an eye on Soundcloud to catch up new releases, especially from 梅干茶漬け. That’s how I began my musical adventure.
Today, I’m writing my first album review ever, and it’s something really special for me. That’s why I want to write about one of the artists who inspired me to take the musical way; so let’s take a look over ‘あじたま見聞録’ (Ajitama Kenmon Roku) by 梅干茶漬け (Umeboshi Chazuke)!

Chip Mom’s Kitchen #50: Seafoam Salad

Posted by

To celebrate the 50th installment of Chip Mom’s Kitchen, I’m taking things back to my roots. See, I am a Midwesty type person. I didn’t transplant myself to Arkansas until some handsome charmer stole me away from all I’d known so that we could raise fuzzy children, get engaged on stage at MAGFest, build a chiptune label, get married, and then (eventually) run away into the woods never to be seen or heard from again. BUT I DIGRESS.

Today I am making one of my family’s classic dishes…

The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews ‘The Ground’ by Psilodump

Happy September & Autumn!

Just released three weeks ago, Psilodump presents to us their newest record, ‘The Ground’. On the whole, this is a wonderful collaboration of artists working together to create a myriad of beautiful tracks. Each composition is distinct in its character, yet they mesh together so well that they flow super fluidly as the album spins through.

Progression: Music Theory 115 – An Example of Process [Part 2]

Posted by

Hey dudes and dudettes,

Last month we covered an example of a process that we could use for writing musical material, working from a set of chords and branching outwards. We can start to look at the alternative now, where we’ll start with the melody and then entrench it in harmony. We’re at a point now where these concepts are quite difficult, so I highly recommend that you go back and read through my previous articles which will help contextualise what we know by this point. I seriously recommend it.  This is my last article that I’m writing on this topic before taking a bit of a hiatus from the Chipwin Blog. It’s with a heavy heart that I admit my time is much less abundant as a teacher than it was as a student.

For the final time for the foreseeable future, let’s jam.

Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 7 [Tracks 11-20]

Hey dudes and dudettes~!

Tuberz here. Rather than rant about theory and rhythms and other malarkey, Brandon thought it would be nice to get me to review some of the stellar new tracks from ‘Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 7’.

I took up the challenge with eager willingness to enjoy some tunage and I must say that I have really been taken by surprise with the sheer quality of some of this music. That’s saying something because I already thought the music would be insanely good. Without further adieu, let’s hear my ranting about other peoples’ application of music theory.

The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews ‘Reviver’ by Kris Keyser

Happy July, peeps!

It’s amazing to me how much more rapidly summer pushes forward the second I start to think of how quickly it’s passing.  It’ll be August tomorrow, and for some of us, it’ll mean we are moving from the scents of slow summer mornings and freshly cut grass to clean paper and sharpened pencils.  For all us New York City folks, it just means the same routine: Escaping the smell of hot garbage to find refuge in tiny apartments where even DMGs seem too big.  No matter where you are, though, we have all been graced with the return of 8bitpeoples, hosting Kris Keyser’s new release, ‘Reviver’.
