The More You Know: The Famicom/NES/2A03 Triangle Channel

Posted by

Despite being nostalgic for me, the Famicom has some very distinct sounds that are instantly recognizable. To me, the one that seems to stick out the most, is the triangle wave. To anyone not familiar, a triangle wave is the shape of a sound wave, and you can guess what shape that it makes.  Yup; a triangle.

But… what causes the Famicom’s triangle wave to be so different compared to when you produce it in a digital audio workstation, or even other programs such as LSDJ? Why does it have a unique sound that’s more audible than the others? Who is the muffin man? We’re about to dig into that after the jump. (more…)

The Download on… Chronowolf’s ‘Meet At the Gazebo’

Posted by

‘Meet At the Gazebo (Tales from MAGFest)’ is a love-letter of sorts to National Harbor, Maryland’s ‘Music And Gaming Festival,’ featuring tracks written for and performed at the convention over the past few years. Bit by Bit: Perspective and Direction

Hello, friends!  Today’s article is a little different; I have had a tough time trying to express what I want to convey without sounding jaded, bitter, or negative.  Or at least in a way that could be taken as such.  After all, sometimes what could be seen as jaded or bitter could simply be a viewpoint based on some less-than-typical experiences.  However, who is to say there is nothing to learn from that?  Is there nothing to learn from both your fans and your critics? Perspective is a crucial key to staying on the direction for the message you want to convey with your art.  This article is going to dive into some of that; I hope you enjoy it.

Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 5 [Tracks 11 – 20]

Welcome to the second day of reviews for the newly-released Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 5! As a reviewer, this is a really interesting way of breaking down such a large compilation because we essentially have a separate ‘album’ worth of incredibly diverse material to prepare for dissection, while still relating it to Volume 5 as a whole. I have the distinct pleasure of going over tracks 11-20, which contain some of the best melodic, heavy, and just plain weird tunes on the compilation. Here we go!

Bit by Bit: Balancing Musical Intuition with Education

Posted by

Hello, friends!  It’s been a while, hasn’t it?  I wanted to start of by thanking all of you that have specifically brought your interest and appreciation of this article series to my attention.  It certainly helps motivate me to continue making these, and coincidentally I have the outlines on an article based off of motivation and goals, but that’s for another time.  This article is based on the necessity to balance your musical intuition with education.  Both, from my perspective, are crucial.  Your application of both of them, of course, is all up to you.
