Aydan Appreciates: ‘Love Songs’ by nanobii

Imagine for just a moment that it’s 1993. Electronic music is still in its early stages, with house, trance, and breakbeat hardcore being some of the EDM movement’s most popular genres. Suddenly, happy hardcore bursts onto the scene; with its characteristic piano usage, spacey synths and stabs, up-tempo and upbeat style, the next phase of this music’s evolution has begun. Now, fast forward to 2017. Numerous happy hardcore labels have shut down and many of the genre’s most popular artists have retired. The scene remains alive through the DDR community, raves, and numerous individuals and collectives in Europe and Asia. One Swedish happy hardcore musician, nanobii, is known for fusing elements of chip into some of his music, and is one of the more active happy hardcore producers to this day. His latest EP, ‘Love Songs’, released on Valentine’s Day, made Bandcamp’s top 40 best-selling albums on release. Let’s dive in and see what this EP has in store for us!

Chip Bit Sid Takes on: 2016 – 3 songs that grew on me!

2016 has been an truly eventful year, with both positive & negative things happening all around us. Chiptune has been a huge part of this year, especially for me. I have reviewed so much music that I was practically reviewing a new album every other week, so it’s obvious that I would have come across some chiptune music that didn’t quite hit me, but when taking another listen later on down the line, a few gems have blown me away. To sum up, here are 3 songs that have grown on me over the year 2016.

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Chema64 – ‘VIZIERS’

Posted by

Unfortunately no ‘4 smalls songs’ this month, instead I’ll be looking at Chema64’s VIZIERS. A bit of context, Chema64 is an LSDJ artist who resides in Mexico City, Mexico. For his music he solely just uses Nintendo Gameboys, creating a mayhem of different sounds. As well as that, Chema64 also founded 56kpsrecords, a netlabel whose goal is to promote chiptune music. Before I begin reviewing, this is the first time I’ve listened to Chema64’s music and I must say it is probably one of the most hard hitting, glitched music I’ve heard, all whilst still containing a groove through out and pouring some sweet WAV dubstep into the mix. It’s hard to believe that all this music has actually been done entirely on LSDJ.

Stokin’ the Forge – ‘Squarewave oasis’ by Fat Frumos

Posted by

September salutations to all of the fine folks of the ChipWIN Nation! This month, it’s my distinct pleasure to share a solid release out of the Ukraine. Odessa’s own Fat Frumos released Squarewave Oasis on Bandcamp last month. The album caught my attention by grabbing hold both of my ears and my rose-tinted recollection of happy hardcore fueled nights of reckless driving.  Self described as an acidcore, chiprave, raggacore, and breakcore release, Squarewave Oasis meshes together a variety of styles into a unique musical admixture. On the surface, the release is good, and upon deep inspection, it is really good. It shines in the places where that rich stylistic palette is allowed to coalesce and truly highlight what Fat Frumos is capable of.
