Mexico is a land of contrasts and, of course, chipmusic is no exception to that. Maybe mostly known because of its raw sound and its so-called ‘iconoclastic nature’, the Mexican chipscene has overcome quite a few setbacks to become what it is now, and it’s given us a couple names to put it on the map. While chipmusic production – at a national level – has been slow in recent years, 2019 left us with an interesting work by one of the most prominent names around here. You may have listened to something by him before – I’m talking about 4 For Fake. Responsible for a vast amount of DMG mods and with a notable musical background, this technological laudator brings to us his first album made entirely in HoustonTracker 2. So let’s take a look at ‘Insect_Byte’ by 4 For Fake.

Aydan Appreciates: ‘[USA]’ by Anamanaguchi

Anyone who’s ever listened to chipmusic has assuredly heard of the legendary Anamanaguchi. A four-piece group from New York City, their 2009 ‘Dawn Metropolis EP‘ was likely the first taste of chipmusic many of us received upon exploring the genre – myself included. 2013’s ‘Endless Fantasy’ saw a departure from this style and marked their first full-length foray into the world of electronic dance music, and spawned a semi-viral video in which the band launched a slice of cheese pizza into space. In October of 2019, they released ‘[USA]’, their second full-length album, and on the off-chance you missed it on release, I’m excited to share it with you all today!

Leveling Up Your Artistic Identity – Episode V: Know Thyself

Generally speaking, the most measurable and gratifying progress will surface when focusing on specific, actionable tasks. The less nebulous your goals, the more feasibly they can be achieved. That being said, it can sometimes be necessary to grapple with less tangible concepts. Amidst the throes of artistic development, it’s not uncommon to encounter feelings of self-doubt, inspirational drought, and mental fatigue. If this sounds familiar, some well-deserved ‘me time’ may be long overdue. While many of us might hesitate to pump the brakes for some healthy introspection, a quick self-diagnostic will help to keep your spirits high and your mind sharp.

This month in The Overworld: Crab Sound

Nestor Ovilla, also known as Crab Sound, is a Chiptune music producer and the founder of one of the first music collectives in his home country of México. Interestingly enough, he is also an illustrator, writer, and experimental photographer. Born in Tuxla Gutierres, the capital of the Chiapas state on the year 1991, he was always drawn to experimental art.

On 2010, he started working with producing and programming his own EDM tracks, an activity that flourished with several projects besides of Crab Sound that he still continues up to this day. Self described as “A boy who inhabits an ice mountain, inventing sounds to make the robots and mutants break into dance”, here’s what he had to say about Chiptune.
