Glenntai Got: “Don’t Wait” by mal4m

Let’s face some hard truths, no matter how popular chiptune gets (as a niche medium), there have always been a lot of people thinking it’s starting to fade away. The reality, though, is that isn’t even close to true. There will always be jaded people; this is inevitable. However chiptune, much like synthesizers in the 80’s, has helped many people evolve their tastes in music beyond just what they expected. A lot of expectations were the concept of the nostalgia and limitations of the sound of a single console or a few combined. It has brought people into a whole new perspective of appreciating composition, sound design, and genres they never expected to find growing on them. People who haven’t explored their music tastes before chip music are exploring the wide variety of music that’s out there. We have people continuing to put chiptune elements and chip music influences in their music, whether it’s strictly hardware, strictly software, or somewhere in between. This is exactly where mal4m’s EP, “Don’t Wait,” comes into play.

In my previous article I gave you an overview of how, in my opinion, to do a chiptune event. I talked about where to begin, setting the grounds of the event, where should you look, who you should get and finally what not to do. Continuing from Part one, I’ll be talking about crowd funding, mastering marketing, and finally the event itself. Let’s go for round two!

I decided to take a break from writing reviews and instead do a guide on how to do a chiptune event, based on my previous experiences. This is an opinionated piece and obviously everyone will have their own way of setting up their own events. If you have a different way of doing things please voice your opinion below, or on the twitters. Let’s discuss!

In light of this guide, I am also beginning yet another Chip Bit Day event! Details can be found at the bottom of this article.

So let’s begin!

For my first official review of the year I’m going back to an album from 2016 in Pixeltune’s latest album ‘For a While’! Pixeltune is an incredibly sophisticated chiptune artist who focuses in using extensive LSDJ layering & programming as well as including other elegant sounds through the use of digital effects and computer keys.

2016 has been an truly eventful year, with both positive & negative things happening all around us. Chiptune has been a huge part of this year, especially for me. I have reviewed so much music that I was practically reviewing a new album every other week, so it’s obvious that I would have come across some chiptune music that didn’t quite hit me, but when taking another listen later on down the line, a few gems have blown me away. To sum up, here are 3 songs that have grown on me over the year 2016.

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: GOTO80 – ‘80864’

These past couple of weeks I’ve been listening to GOTO80’s latest album, ‘80864’, released via ‘DATA AIRLINES’. This was the first release from GOTO80 that I have listened to. Honestly, I never really got into his distorted, glitchy style of music, however with ‘80864’, GOTO80 brought the iconic ‘Roland 808 drum machine’ into the mix, so I thought I definitely should pick this up and give it a listen.
