Kuma’s Quick Shots #22: Libla, Mint℠, & SemiProcastinator

Posted by

Welcome back to Quick Shots: the monthly album review column in which I seek out some of the newest music the scene has to offer and do my best to help you determine if something is worth your time.  This month, I have three albums from some lesser known artists who offer unique listening experiences from one another.  One wants to see you get down on that dance floor and strut your stuff. The second wants to share a moment in time in with you as they reflect on their life in relative solitude. The last wants you to indulge in some work they’ve contributed to an upcoming game that is just as easy to groove to as it is to zone out to it.  With such a wide offering of experiences on the table this month, I think we should jump right in.  Join me as I dissect sophomore releases from Libla and SemiProcastinator, and take a closer look at Mint℠’s third LP.

Kuma’s Quick Shots: Round 18

Hey there, ChipWINners! Welcome back to Quick Shots: the album review column in which I break down the finer points of some of the latest releases in the scene, then give you a numerical TL;DR to help you determine if a record is right for you.  This month, I have two albums up for review that explore spaces I’ve yet to discuss on the blog.  One is a metal album that incorporates vocals via the Hatsune Miku Vocaloid software, and has incredibly powerful lyrics.  The other is an album from an accomplished pianist who has composed a very stirring concept album using the tracker software in the Pico-8 virtual console.  Both albums albums caught me off guard and have a lot to offer their respective audiences.  That said, let’s not waste anymore time! Sit back, relax, and plug in those headphones as I take the time to review the latest from 8-Bit Hero and Gruber.

Hey, everybody! Welcome back to Quick Shots: the album review column in which I break down a handful of new EPs, then give a quick and dirty TL;DR to help you determine if a record is worth your time.  This time around, I have two unique albums that are miles apart in terms of style and country of origin.  While one is the product of several artists uniting to produce something truly bombastic, the other is a culmination of a single person’s ambition to pay homage to the medium he holds so dearly.  So let’s not dilly dally any longer.  Sit back, relax, and indulge with me as I dissect work by presented by the world renowned Japanese chiptune & breakbeat label OthermanRecords and Canadian newcomer HOFFMAN_IV.

The President’s Manifesto: Beer & Chip Vol.7

Sup y’all? =) President Hoodie here with the first of my beer and chiptune review columns in quite some time! I know, I know; you’re all wondering, “Brandon, what in the hell made you think to knock the dust off that ol’ thing and bring it back?” In a few words:

Shitty Miller Lite and Bud Melvin

Why Miller Lite? Who cares. It sucks (ratebeer.com actually gives it a zero lol).

The lengths I go to for chiptune journalism....

Let’s get on to the real reason for this article: the music. Specifically, Bud Melvin‘s latest release, ‘CNTRY & NESTRNT’.

The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews: Lo-Fi Night at the Middle East Upstairs

On the night of the 22nd, a bunch of East Coast dwellers got together to perform at The Middle East Upstairs in Cambridge, MA. They got together to give the people what they needed for their Saturday night,: and that, my friends, was a night of over the top lo-fi goodness. From the openers to our magical headlinah, the stage was graced by:

Myself, Sam Mulligan, Br1ght Pr1mate, Kris Keyser, and Radlib! Hell. Yes. This article covers the show, what these guys are doing, and how they’re making it happen.

Chip Treatment with Professor Oakes: ‘TURNTNES’

Posted by

HEXAWE (which is brilliantly abbreviated from Hexadecimal Awesome!), is an international net label featuring artists and tracks created with LGPT, also known as Piggy Tracker (which is programmed by Marc Nostromo). Managed and run by several bosses who created a ‘low-level chaos wiki’ website, this label has released several compilation albums which include the HEXAWE catalog, casio relapse compo, and the very compilation this review will cover, ‘TURNTNES‘. This 17-track compilation — released on July 16, 2015 — features submissions from an eclectic mix of artists including Peter Swimm, PaK-Zer0, and overnrake (to name a few), and celebrates the 10-year birthday of this beloved program. The hitch? Submissions include a sample pack recorded by Doomcloud (an artist that boasts having traveled around the world 31 times by the ripe age of 14) straight out of his Nintendo Entertainment System with a MIDINES, and were only allocated up to 500k worth of the artists’ ‘own’ vocal samples.
