Aydan Appreciates: ‘Four Elements’ by uraboroshi

Posted by

The name uraboroshi should be relatively fresh in the minds of us ChipWINners; their ChipWIN debut was on Volume 5, with the explosive and frenetic ‘Greed Palace’. The track essentially defies genres and embodies chiptune music. A little longer than a year later, esctrax, a chipmusic label based in Japan, has released uraboroshi’s ‘Four Elements’. This EP consists of four compositions depicting earth, air, fire, and water in addition to a piece symbolizing the unity of the four. Today, we’ll be looking at several aspects of this brief aural venture. Let’s check out what this up-and-coming artist’s work has to offer!

Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 6 [Tracks 11-20]

Posted by

Welcome to the second round of track reviews for Volume 6! I’ll be taking you through some of the best that this Volume has to offer. I didn’t know that by choosing this review date I’d get to talk about YZYX, Kubbi, Vince Kaichan, Starving GOGO (whom I’ve previously reviewed), and my good friend and collaborator Auxcide, but I’ll just consider myself lucky. I’m glad I sat this year out to witness the awesome that is Volume 6. This should be fun. ;3

Paul’s Tech Talk – LSDJ 4.9.5, Transposition and Optimization

Posted by

Hello everyone and welcome to the 1st article in the all-new ChipWIN Blog column: Paul’s Tech Talk! I’m Paul from the French Gameboy duo Pain Perdu. This column aims to follow-up and complement our Youtube tutorial video series on LSDJ. With LDSJ ver 4.9.5, Superhero Dev Johan K kickstarted a wave of very significant updates, which would later constitute a pretty comprehensive overhaul of the program.

Mimicking a feature that was present in other trackers such as Famitracker; 4.9.5 introduced a new instrument setting: TRANSP ON/OFF. Why is this important, you might ask? The answer to this question can be summarized into one word that in my opinion is a staple of Demoscene, Chiptune, and Tracker culture: “OPTIMIZATION”, or as Max and I like to call it, “cramming as much stuff into as little space as possible”.

Guérin’s Dissections: ‘discredit denial destroy’ by Starving GOGO

Posted by

Italian musician Starving GOGO has been producing experimental chip for the past few years, and hell is it good. He’s not very well known over here in the States, and that’s a shame. Though a bit rough around the edges, he uses his clear mastery of Famitracker and LSDJ in incredibly unique compositions. Complexity and chaos abound in his latest release, ‘discredit denial destroy’.

What’s On Tap – Roboctopus

Posted by

Hello and welcome to the first sun-filled summer edition of What’s on Tap. This month I am pleased to be able to review the brand spankin’ new album ‘Your Heart is a Pie Chart’ by the one and only Roboctopus, released on the Cheapbeats netlabel. Not only do I get to talk about new music from one of my favorite artists, but we get to publish the review on the exact album release date of June 5th! Normally these reviews publish a few weeks to a month after a release, and this is an exciting opportunity for me to give a guided tour through an album that most everyone will not have heard yet. Grab a cold beverage and load up your Bluetooth speaker on the deck – we’re kicking off summer right… now!

Guérin’s Dissections: ‘the ether’ by Shadrew

Posted by

Following up his stellar 2014 debut EP, ‘The Infinite’, comes Shadrew’s newest, ‘the ether’. It’s an introspective, dreamy LP filled with lush chords and heavy beats. Expanding upon the sounds that made his debut so good, Shadrew creates even more detailed, hectic, and (yes) ethereal jams. Join me as we journey through the cosmos of Shadrew’s latest release. :3
