Hoodie Highlights… Lars Shurilla of SLC Chip!

Posted by

Happy November, folks! For this month’s interview, I talked to a multi-instrument & multi-alias chipmusican & event curator friend of mine. This cat’s done quite a bit over the last handful of years (even more than I realized!), and shows no signs of stopping any time soon!

Rhyphte Reviews: Game Over Richmond

Posted by

The MAGFest: Game Over series is a more intermittent offshoot of the greater MAGFest umbrella of events that fills some of the gaps between larger and more prominent episodes. Game Over: Richmond took place at Fallout in — well, Richmond — on Saturday, October 6th from 7pm to… Whenever it was we funneled out of there. I don’t remember. It was very late.

I’m in Hampton for work at the moment, so I figured I’d drop by and check it out. I wasn’t expecting much going in, but it was a total blast and I was inspired to share my experience when I saw that The ChipWIN Blog team was looking for new hands. Before we even got in the building, I noticed several #chipmoms there supporting their adult children, which was very sweet but also somewhat alarming, given the aura of the venue.

The event catered mostly to the local nerdcore scene, featuring popular “brand-name” regional acts and aspiring local artists in a (Bethesda) Fallout-themed barcade that moonlights as an exclusive BDSM club! CLEARLY the venue had a lot of different stuff going on, and it was extremely refreshing to see members of so many different subculture groups coming together to jam out to some retro tunes. If nothing else, it was (what I’d imagine is) a relatively unique opportunity to see a model cosplaying Bowsette rave-hopping her heart out to Castlevania remixes. So, I can cross that off my list of things that I didn’t know I needed to see.

Chip Bit Day 2017 – Free cake, alien balloons and Europe’s finest Chipmusic!

Posted by

May 6th saw the return of Chip Bit Day; a celebration of Chiptune organised by Richard Lewis who you might know as blogger ‘Chip! Bit! Sid!‘ or by his musical pseudonym ‘Jellyatrix.’ Primarily funded by fans using sites like Indiegogo, Chip Bit Day’s second year was just as popular as the debut! With a lineup including festival favourites such as HarleyLikesMusic, and plenty of free goodies from Game Boy cartridge stickers of the performing artists to delicious cake, crowdfunders definitely got plenty for their money. I arrived good and early on the Saturday afternoon, ready for the hard slog of an 8-hour Chiptune marathon to find a few others eager for the show to start.

How to WIN at Chiptune!

Episode 0: A little about me

Hello! Auracle here, and this is How To WIN At Chiptune, my first contribution to The ChipWIN Blog! I’ve been helping out around the Facebook group as a moderator for a while, so it’s great to increase my responsibilities a little further! The goal of this weekly series is to equip you to become a more active and involved part of your local chiptune community, and to help bring chiptune out of tiny basement clubs and niche conventions.  To be clear, “win” doesn’t mean global fame and fortune; it means the ability to realise your vision and do the things that make you happy! I’m proud of the part I’ve played in the growth of my city’s scene (Manchester, UK) along with my friends at GameFace and I’d like to share some of that useful experience with you. Before we jump in, let me tell you a little about myself and how I got to this point. Context! ⊂((・▽・))⊃

The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews & Interviews: The Final I/O

Posted by

I’m back again for the second time this month, though this time, I’m here to talk about the last ever regularly held I/O. Held unexpectedly in the back of a busy bar in Bushwick full of the everyday mid-twenty Brooklyn inhabitant, nobody would suspect a chiptune show to roar from the back room of Pine Rock Box Shop. Reminded of a NYC version of Diagon Alley, I watched the room fill at 8:45PM, and I had the opportunity to meet so many kind people I only know from collecting records or from chatting online. Working together to create a creative and interactive environment for those around them, people danced, looked onto the artists’ setups, and most of all, stood as a collective with a strong love towards a vast genre, as the last monthly I/O came to an end.

Jessen Jurado, the show’s director, brought back original veterans of the first ever I/O to close out the last monthly one, hinting that, maybe, an I/O festival may be in the future. Starting with an excellent set of artists owning the open mic (Delphiki on Gameboy and drum pad in a skillfull and on point performance, Iron Curtain with two tracks on Gameboy [one being a birthday tribute to Radlib], Hedonism Bit showcasing Renoise chops, Flow Mein returning yet again to showcase Gameboy knowledge, Hunterquinn expertly running LSDJ, and Card Party amping up the audience even more with more intricate Gameboy beats). Goferboy, Kris Keyser, and Radlib all gave standing ovation performances (I mean, how could the crowd sit when we couldn’t all help but dance?), while diy_destruction and NO CARRIER provided excellent and interactive visuals. Better yet, this I/O landed on Radlib’s birthday, and seeing friends and fellow performers hop on stage and carry him around mid performance is solid proof that while we all want to create and have fun, it’s better to do so when you’re around the people who matter most.

So, without further ado, let’s hear more about the visualists and headliners of Friday’s event.
