Guérin’s Dissections: “Decline” by CCDM

At the time of the release of ‘Decline’, it had been over 7 years since CCDM’s previous full-length , ‘7″ of Doom’. The scene is ripe for some hard, dark Amiga breakcore, and CCDM aims to deliver in his latest release. Filled with glitchy drum breaks and grungy, low-bitrate samples, ‘Decline’ will melt your brain while you thrash to its beats.

Progression: Music Theory 108 – Extended Harmonic Devices, Pivoting, and Planing

Hey dudes and dudettes,

Tuberz here with both the first post of the year 2018 for the Chipwin Blog (!!!) and my eighth article in the realm of music theory. Christmas was great. New Years was dope. I ate far too much food and to even that out, I need to let a little bit of air out of my fat head. Last month we covered the idea of Time Signatures and debunking the myth surrounding its difficulty by breaking it down into twos and threes. As I’ve been covering music theory for eight months now, if you have difficulty at any point, don’t dismay! Just backtrack through my previous articles to help get your head around the theory concepts I’ll be discussing. This month I’m covering additional harmonic devices that you can use, including the idea of pivoting to other key areas, and the idea of diatonic and chromatic planing.

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: ミカヅキBIGWAVE – ‘わたしのYUME DIARY’

It’s my final article of 2017, so I thought I’d write something special that has been a highlight of the year for me. First of all, this review is not associated with chiptune, but it’s probably my favourite album of 2017, mainly down to how it made an impact on me during the year. Released jointly by the artist and ‘neon city records‘, ‘わたしのYUME DIARY’ by ‘カヅキBIGWAVE’ is primarily a Future Funk album, and isn’t something I generally listen to. When I first came across the genre, I didn’t really take to it; mainly down to the constant slow downs & over saturation of funky samples. However, that didn’t stop ‘わたしのYUME DIARY’ from going against those cliches that reside in Future Funk, and instead relies upon making great, catchy melodies that stick in your head for most of 2017.

Glenntai Got: “Don’t Wait” by mal4m

Let’s face some hard truths, no matter how popular chiptune gets (as a niche medium), there have always been a lot of people thinking it’s starting to fade away. The reality, though, is that isn’t even close to true. There will always be jaded people; this is inevitable. However chiptune, much like synthesizers in the 80’s, has helped many people evolve their tastes in music beyond just what they expected. A lot of expectations were the concept of the nostalgia and limitations of the sound of a single console or a few combined. It has brought people into a whole new perspective of appreciating composition, sound design, and genres they never expected to find growing on them. People who haven’t explored their music tastes before chip music are exploring the wide variety of music that’s out there. We have people continuing to put chiptune elements and chip music influences in their music, whether it’s strictly hardware, strictly software, or somewhere in between. This is exactly where mal4m’s EP, “Don’t Wait,” comes into play.

Progression: Music Theory 107 – Time Signatures and Subdivisions

Hey dudes and dudettes,

Tuberz here with my seventh article in the realm of music theory, and how you can take theory principles and apply them to your own jams. I’ve just returned from a hecking good, heaps awesome trip to Finland for a research conference, and Japan for… well… Japan. I guess. This gave me lots of time to organize my thoughts on this topic. Last month we covered the idea of secondary dominant chords, and other functional chords for pivoting into other keys and tonal areas. By this point, my articles may seem more like science fiction novels with a grounding in theoretical physics, so I think it may be wise to peruse some of my other articles to help bring you up to speed. This article is going to cover my favourite topic: Time signatures. We’ll talk about some other cool rhythmic ideas as well.

Guérin’s Dissections: ‘DESTINY’ by Tri Angles

‘DESTINY’ is an essay on wanderlust. It is a statement of contentment and restlessness. Tri Angles conjures amazing emotions in his music, and this album is no different. Though only loosely connected to chiptune at this point, Tri Angles is still part of the community, and his work deserves recognition for the ways it pushes genre boundaries and demonstrates composition prowess. In an album that most closely resembles the music he produced under his previous pseudonym, SMILETRON, ‘DESTINY’ truly captivates and shimmers with a unique beauty that most other musicians can only dream of.
