Guérin’s Dissections: ‘Sinergy’ by IDecade

Posted by

IDecade—yet another amazing Italian chipmusician—is a relative newcomer to chiptune. You may have seen him posting his LSDJ tutorial videos around the Facebook group recently, but he started in 2015 using Milkytracker. Since his transition to LSDJ in 2016, he’s been making catchy dance tracks in various genres, and he’s made an immense amount of progress in the 2 short years he’s been releasing musi. With his latest album, ‘Sinergy’—released this past December—he’s ready to set the international chip community on fire.

ChipWIN-tern’s Netlabels To Keep An Eye On

Posted by

I know we here at ChipWIN generally tend to stay away from Buzzfeed-y listicle-type articles, but with all the different music coming out these days it can be super hard to actually keep up with everything. If you don’t know where to look, you’ll miss something great – and if you DO know where to look, all your friends will love you for giving them dank music recommendations!* (*Note: ChipWIN does not guarantee love of any kind regardless of the circumstance.)

While this is by no means an exhaustive list, here’s some of my favorite places to find chiptune and chiptune-adjacent music.

Aydan Appreciates: ‘Cosmic Diaspora’ by Shnabubula

Posted by

One of the first albums I listened to during my transition from a hardcore VGM fan to a chiptune madman was Shnabubula’s classic ‘NES JAMS‘. The album combined many of the elements that I love in music – improvisation, soft piano tones, and a certain sense of nostalgia, even for games that I had never played. Shnabubula had already cemented himself in my mind as one of the most innovative artists I’d heard once I finished listening through the album for the first time. Fast forward to May of this year, five years from the release of this iconic album, and Shnabubula has unveiled his most extravagant work yet, ‘Cosmic Diaspora’, a progressive-fusion suite with heavy SNES-esque instrumentation. Let us witness this journey in all of its splendor together.

ChipWIN-tern Presents: YM2017

Posted by

Howdy-ho friends! Newcomers to the blog might not know about the soft spot I have for FM synthesis, but rest assured that any time I get a chance to talk about someone doing cool chiptunes on the Genesis (or any of the other myriad ways someone might achieve that around these parts), I jump at the chance!  If you add in someone doing something for the good of the community, well, let me tell you, there aren’t many better ways to brighten my day. A few weeks ago, David DeGraw, an enterprising purveyor of fine Game Boy audio accessories, announced that he was putting together a compilation for tunes to play on the Sega Genesis and Nomad.  I took some time to interview him, and without further ado, I’d like to tell you all about the YM2017 compilation project hitting your vintage Sega consoles this August!

Guérin’s Dissections: ‘discredit denial destroy’ by Starving GOGO

Posted by

Italian musician Starving GOGO has been producing experimental chip for the past few years, and hell is it good. He’s not very well known over here in the States, and that’s a shame. Though a bit rough around the edges, he uses his clear mastery of Famitracker and LSDJ in incredibly unique compositions. Complexity and chaos abound in his latest release, ‘discredit denial destroy’.

ChipWIN-tern Spotlight: ‘The Frequency Modulators Orchestra Vol. 1’ by Amplitude Problem

Posted by

We all like solo projects, right? They’re always cool.  Someone who’s been doing their thing as a part of a group or a series of collaborations gets to do their own thing.  They give themselves the opportunity to open up the throttle and do what they really want to do. Lo and behold, I have such an offering for you! The latest release on Ubiktune, ‘The Frequency Modulators Orchestra Vol. 1’ by Amplitude Problem, is the newest project from demoscene veteran Juan Irming.
