Back in 2011, before I had been formally introduced to chiptune, I listened to a lot of folk and indie artists. Modest Mouse, Built to Spill, Tree People, and AJJ (then Andrew Jackson Jihad) dominated my playlists and YouTube history. I listened to that music so often that as I got older I had to start taking breaks from it because it felt too familiar. But nevertheless, those records maintained their value to me over the years, acting as my go-to answer when asked about the kind of music I like.

So what does all that have to do with ‘.​-​-​. .​.​- .​-​.​. .​-​.​.’ by null? Well, there’s a special feeling you get when you hear a song that sounds enough like your favorite band to make you do a double take. When you find yourself wondering if you didn’t get the memo about their early-years alias. When you realize you’ve discovered something completely new, but so similar to what you’re fond of. It’s a good feeling – and when you hear chiptune in it, it’s an even better feeling. And here’s where I tell you all about it.

This Month in The Overworld: RRayen

Hello dear readers! I’m Pixel Syndrome, and if you love anthropomorphised Game Boys, rainbows and cool characters with green hair, then you may already know me from my colorful entries to the ‘Chiptunes WIN: Volume 7’ alternative covers!

I’m stoked to introduce my monthly international artist focused column titled The Overworld. Of course, being a fan of classic style NES games like Adventure Island II and Legend of Zelda, when trying to find a suitable name I could not shake the concept that sometimes when playing, we cannot see the bigger picture, and so it’s helpful to see the interconnection of all levels and locations of a videogame that’s an overworld map. Hopefully this international column will help everyone discover hidden areas in places we normally wouldn’t even think about; hidden locations and bonus levels of the world of Chiptune music as we know it.

This Chiptune auteur was born in the cold lands of Trelew (Rawson department of the Chubut Province), in southern Argentina. Growing up in this small, desertic climate city, with lots of wind, where the ocean dominates the horizon, and southern winds cause sudestadas (a.k.a. Intense wind storms that may bring heavy rain) has definitely left an imprint on her art.

Glenntai Got: ‘Continue?’ by Blue Navi

Many of you may not be too familiar with Blue Navi. That might also change when you discover that they previously went under the moniker Ayoshutduff, who has been a seasoned veteran of many Chiptunes = WIN releases. With this EP, titled ‘Continue?’, we have a three-track collection of music finished since his previous, hefty album late last October. Like many artists expanding their level of versatility, Blue Navi decided to experiment with styles out of their comfort zone, and in this case we’ve been given some synthwave that carries a serious mood about it. Glenntai Got: Business Pastel

2018 has been a good start for chipmusic, and we can easily thank those who released music in the prior year for that. 2017 had some very high-key releases that managed to overshadow many others due to their surge in popularity and the quality of their music being nothing short of top-notch. As a community this is a great “problem” to have, but from an individual artist perspective it can be very tough for new or less-popular acts. If you haven’t listened to it yet, you might accidentally have slept on Business Pastel’s self-titled debut album, which deserves the attention of anyone in chipmusic that enjoys dance music with vibes of electro, future bass, d&b and hints or suggestions of other genres.

Paul’s Tech Talk – LSDJ 5.3.5_4x Part 2: Sandpaper vs Eardrums

This article is the second part of an issue on the spicy topic of PSG Chip Overclocking. In the first part, we tackled the basic theory behind what overclocking could achieve on an NES when ticks sped up enough to reach into the audio range. Today, we’re going to try and be more specific, and try out some practical examples on Gameboy.

While audio range speeds can be achieved at high tempos on stock LSDJ, we’re going to try and venture beyond that, thanks to the very unique test build of LSDJ: 5.3.5_4x, which multiplies tempo by FOUR.

Paul’s Tech Talk – LSDJ 5.3.5_4x Part 1: Overclocking and dual oscillator theory

Today we’re going to talk about a very special version of LSDJ, and a tracking method that cannot often be used on Gameboy, but flourishes on other platforms such as NES: ~ OVERCLOCKING ~ ♪♫

During the avalanche of updates that gave light to this column in the first place, the community was hard at work trying to sniff out bugs and offer feature suggestions of their own. Some were very daring, seemed almost impossible, but were still considered by Johan for integration. One of them was actually the notion of underclocking. Why make the gameboy even slower than it is, you will undoubtedly ask? Well there is one limitation of the Gameboy hardware that theoretically could have been overcome with this method: its note range.
