Sladerfluous Reviews: ‘Diafon’ by Vian

Posted by

October goes out in a glorious cascade of Norwegian flare with ‘Diafon’ by Vian.

‘Diafon’ by Vian is absolutely, positively guddommelig.

If you, like me, don’t have the pleasure of the ability to understand Norwegian, that’s okay. ‘Diafon’ offers depth beyond understanding the lyrics, part of the charm lies in letting go and allowing Vian to sweep you into their euphoric sound. I almost don’t want to google translate the entire lyric set. ‘Diafon’ is prolific with an expansive compositional structure that forks and turns with deliberate precision, creating pockets of wonder between instantly gripping hooks as transitions tease your expectations. ‘Diafon’ holds so much power in its delivery, yet manages to employ that power in concentrated, intentional doses for maximum impact. Production values are crisp and professional, making ‘Diafon’ a stellar release destined for album of the year status.

Soft swirls of piano, tight drum work, dreamy acoustic guitar, ringing electric guitar, hypnotizing vocals, and fleeting electronica find common ground on Vian’s alternative indie journey of expressive, progressive sound that gels so well together you’d think the band had been together for decades. Tracks range from ethereal alt-folk-electronica to prog-rock power ballads as Vian traverses ‘Diafon’ with confidence and a defiantly strong sense of self.

Hey, what’s up ChipWINners? It’s your boy BronxKuma, welcoming you back to the blog.  This time around, we’re going to be doing something very special, as today I’ll be joining forces with Viridian Forge & Chris Krogsgard to cover the latest release from the label: ‘Forest = ВИН‘!

‘Forest = ВИН’ is a truly noteworthy release because it represents continued success for our collective.  Taking the opportunity to work with Kubbi and Agri, the founders of the Russian based Forest net label and long time supporters and partners of ChipWIN, we’ve put together a collection of aria that is truly wonderful.  This is something we’re all very proud of, as this stellar accomplishment is the 18th album ChipWIN has released in five years! Consisting of thirteen phenomenal tracks from all over the globe, ‘Forest = ВИН’ is a labor of love that is so absolutely resplendent that we just can’t wait to share with you.  So let’s not waste anymore time: sit back, relax, and plug in those headphones: it’s time to go wandering into the Forest.

Chris Considers: ‘Black’ by Zan

There’s more than one reason to get hyped about the album that I’m reviewing this month, chipfam. Not only is ‘Black’ by Russian chiptune artist Zan a killer new release in its own right, but it also marks the launch of an exciting new chiptune netlabel, • Forest •! Yes, the founder of Forest Booking, Alexander Agri, has recently leveled up from booking agency to full-blown netlabel and joined forces with none other than Kubbi to begin releasing awesome chipmusic to the world. In addition, ‘Black’ features Twistboy (now going by the name Purely Grey), who takes turns with Zan remixing each other’s tracks on the latter half of the album. I’ve expressed my love for both Kubbi and Twistboy’s music in previous blog posts, and to see their paths cross for an album in this way was more than enough to pique my interest. After hearing ‘Black’ by Zan, I think you’ll agree that this is one hell of a kickass release, and look forward to what • Forest • puts out in the future.

Chris Considers: ‘Red Eyes and Gray Skies’ by Laffe the Fox

Since the conclusion of our track-by-track breakdown of ChipWIN Vol. 4, we’ve been having to play catch-up here on the blog. Just a glance at the ChipWINdex reveals that this summer has been chock full of incredible chiptune releases. About 2 months ago, ‘Red Eyes and Gray Skies’ was released by Norwegian artist Laffe the Fox, whose name should ring a bell if you’ve been following our annual compilation albums. The feelgood party atmosphere of her Vol. 2 contribution, ‘Sloth Machines’, will never cease to put a smile on my face every time that I hear it. This trend continues with the release of her second album via the Russian netlabel, BleepLove. ‘Red Eyes and Gray Skies’ is a delicious slice of bitpop with some unique and unexpected flavors thrown into the mix. Featuring collaborative tracks with Rymdkraft, Super Robotic Encounters and Robot Orgy Massacre, these hypnotic hooks and catchy melodies are all set to burrow themselves into your brain.

Chris Considers: ‘Ember’ by Kubbi

It’s hard to believe that it’s already been over two years since Kubbi (Vegard Kummen) released his last full-length album, ‘Circuithead’and just over a year since his legendary late-night live performance at MAGFest 12. Time sure does fly, and so does Kubbi. During the interim, the dynamic dragon whisperer has descended upon the Norwegian landscape in order to drop his most dramatic album to date, ‘Ember’.
