Aydan Appreciates: ‘Eye’ by Hypnogram

Posted by

You could remember Hypnogram, aka Noah Deck, from his self-titled debut EP released through chiptune netlabel Smoking Mirrors. You could also remember him from his contribution to µWIN, ‘Ephemeral Emerald’. Maybe you’ve seen him live at Little Sound Assembly among the likes of Tri Angles, Saskrotch, PANDAstar, or numerous others. Or, maybe this article will be the first you’ve heard of the man at the forefront of chiptrance music, in which case you’re in for a delectable aural treat. Hypnogram is a newer face in the chipscene and has seldom released music, but the few tracks this artist has revealed establishes his style and the sheer amount of polish that goes into his craft. With the release of his first full-length release, ‘Eye’ (again through Cincinnati-based netlabel Smoking Mirrors), this chiptrance master is ready to unveil his latest masterpiece to our beloved scene!

So You Wanna Make A Chiptune #4: Motivation

Posted by

Happy New Year ChipWINners!  Welcome back to my column, So You Wanna Make A Chiptune! It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these.  Normally, I’ve reserved SYWMAC for the review of hardware and software related to the production of chiptune to help you determine what would be best suited for you. However, with this being the first article of the new year, I thought I’d talk about something just as important: motivation.

I’m sure a great many of you have made resolutions to become more active, steadfast and prolific with your creative endeavors. Just like with any other resolution, I know you’re going to need help staying focused. It’s okay: concentrating on new goals, New Year’s resolutions or otherwise, can be a daunting task. Fortunately, there are plenty of resources within the scene to help you stay motivated! If you’re willing to work towards your larger goal by doing smaller goals, you’re guaranteed to make your dreams a reality in no time. Let’s not waste any more time. Come along with me as I guide you beautiful unicorns to pristine waters that I hope you will drink from!

Kuma’s Quick Shots: Round 10

Sup ChipWINners? Welcome back to Quick Shots, the album review column where I take a gander at new releases and throw my fifty cents in on their overall quality. This time around, instead of reviewing albums from a few underdogs in the scene, I’ve taken the time to look over releases from three artists that I first became familiar with because of Chiptunes = WIN! Each of these artists were all featured in ChipWIN Vol. 1 and not only have I loved them all since then, but I’ve seen them continue to grow and change in ways that have made me look at music differently. So without further ado, I’d like for you guys to join me as I take a gander at new music from Lukhash, Whitely, and +Let’s Disinfect!+!

Bit By Bit – Having a Fit Over Fitting In (Without Ever Fitting In)

Posted by

Hello, friends; welcome to the second installment of Bit by Bit.  When I decided to start this column I started to pay attention to people’s inquiries about things they feel uncomfortable or otherwise concerned with.  This one I have had a hard time trying to explain in a format that is both thorough and succinct, partially because of how broad this topic can get and the variables involved within certain situations.

Which problem, you ask?  Click on the read more button and I’ll explain.

Nonfinite Explores: PANDAstar – ‘FOUND’

pandastar - anthony's review

Man oh man folks, has my brain been addled lately! About four days ago, I sat down to work on my review of PANDAstar’s new album, ‘FOUND’, recently released via the kawaii8bit netlabel. I had everything put together and ready to release today, and do you know what? Turns out I’d reviewed the wrong album; I went straight to ‘TROPOSPHERE’ and completely spaced ‘FOUND’! Derp.

El Presidente, Mr. Hoodie, was kind enough to notify me this morning of the error, and I vowed to get the correct album reviewed in time for the scheduled May 4th release… right after chocolate chip pancakes and a screening of the classic French short film, “The Red Balloon” with a friend, (slumber party!), which I had not seen previously.

Later that morning, I was a few songs into PANDAstar’s ‘FOUND’, and the film, which had been pulled up on YouTube, looped. PANDAstar’s music continued to play as the credits began to roll. As I switched tabs, fully intending to halt the repeating film, its own beautiful orchestral music playing, I paused. “Wait a minute,” I thought. “This is in the same key.” I started to pay closer attention. “You’re blowing my mind right now!” my friend exclaimed. She was already very familiar with this film. (more…)
