Aydan Appreciates: ‘Modern Closure’ by 4mat

Posted by

‘Nadir’ was my first exposure to 4mat’s timeless and emotional music. I was given the honor to review the album in 2014, and it filled a musical void I never knew existed until I listened to it in depth over and over again. With off-kilter percussion and melodies, polyrhythms galore, and overarching themes of memory and self-doubt, ‘Nadir’ is a thing of beauty, with some of its hauntingly beautiful melodies still ringing in my head to this day. Since the release of ‘Nadir‘ and the remaster of ‘Decades‘, however, the artist’s Bandcamp page had been relatively quiet up until the surprising release of ‘Modern Closure’, an expansive 18-track journey through the depths of emotion.

ChipWIN-tern Spotlight: ‘chipsynth PortaFM SONGS’, by ToyCompany

Posted by

Over the last few years, for reasons best left to the wastes of time, I’ve dedicated a lot more time on the blog writing about albums that feature FM synthesis, be it on live chips or emulated. It seems like in a sea of Gameboy music, FM often goes by the wayside. Thankfully, some folks in the frozen northlands of Mapleopolis  Montreal are fighting the good fight and have been working to change that. If you’ve used a DAW to make chipmusic in the last 20 years, you’re probably familiar with Plogue and their line of chiptune emulation VSTs. Their latest release, the PortaFM, focuses on the emulation of the YM2413 chip (also known as the OPLL), and the good folks at Toy Company have released a small album to demonstrate just what this baby can do.

Aydan Appreciates & Interviews: ‘Dimensions’ & Shirobon

Posted by

Hey ChipWINners! 2016 has been a breathtakingly impressive year for chipmusic. It’s not even the end of February yet and we’ve already seen amazing work from the likes of LITTLE PAW, Awesome Force, Conquer Monster, and many others. While there have been some rising stars and a lot of new talent hitting the scene, chiptune veterans are strutting their stuff as well, pushing our community into the brink of mainstream music culture. One such example would be the legendary Shirobon, whose most recent releases, ‘The Arcade Dream’ and ‘Infinity’, blew a lot of his impressive earlier work out of the water. Just last week, he released his latest work through Hyperwave Records, ‘Dimensions’, and it’s already been received with astounding applause and praise from the community. Let’s take a look at what Shirobon’s EP has in store for us!

Aydan Appreciates & Interviews: ‘Fragmentation’ & Professor Shyguy

Posted by

Longtime chipmusic veteran Brandt Cooley, aka Professor Shyguy, is a highly revered, R&B influenced artist whose music typically features soulful vocals, powerful guitar solos, and memorable melodies. His golden voice is immediately recognizable by any fan familiar with his work, in addition to his phenomenal shredding on the axe. Shyguy is also an extremely prolific artist, with several singles and numerous album releases since his first ‘official’ album, ‘Geekotica’, released in mid-2012. ‘Fragmentation’, his chip-pop-rock opera amalgam, is a tale of growing up which was soft-released to the public on December 5th and it’s his most powerful and emotional work to date. Let’s delve into this incredible album!

Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 4 [Tracks 1 – 5]

Posted by

Welcome to the first of our upcoming track-by-track reviews for the newly-released Chiptunes = WIN: Volume 4! Although the scope and reach of ChipWIN has expanded over the past few years, the annual compilation release remains the central focus of this enterprise: the Wrestlemania to your Royal Rumble, the World Series to your All-Star weekend, or the Metroid Prime to your Other M, as it were. In addition to general exposure for the artists involved and supporting the small but passionate chip music community, this compilation is always exciting to me because I get to hear what some of my favorite artists have been working on, as well as discovering new favorites among familiar names. Make sure to grab your copy from the link above, and let’s get this review started – it’s oppressively hot outside, and this album is about to make the A/C kick into overdrive!

Aydan Appreciates & Interviews: ‘Blood Eagle’ & Sabrepulse

Posted by

Sabrepulse is, arguably, one of the greatest pioneers of chipmusic. Two of his earliest albums, 2005’s ‘Famicom Connection‘ and 2006’s ‘Chipbreak Wars‘, can be considered as two of the foundational pillars for the chipbreak subgenre. Over the years, Sabrepulse’s style shifted slowly to a more drum ‘n bass influenced vibe, and with the release of ‘First Crush‘ in 2011, a much more modern influence could be heard in his music. Now, with ‘Blood Eagle’, his first of two releases in a three-and-a-quarter year hiatus, Sabrepulse shows us yet again just how well he can adapt to the modern music scene while showcasing his roots as a chipmusician.
