Aydan Appreciates: ‘sketchbook vol #1: 12-17’ by Slime Girls

Slime Girls’ ‘Vacation Wasteland EP’ was one of the first albums I listened to when I was just getting into chipmusic, and it’s stuck with me for a really long time. Every once in a while, I listen to this classic and reminisce on the events five years ago that ended with my current involvement in the ChipWIN community as a writer and occasional musician. It really has quite a special place in my heart. So, when I saw that Slime Girls had just released a compilation of unfinished works titled ‘sketchbook vol #1: 12-17’, I jumped at the chance to give it a listen. I fell in love with a number of tracks on this enormous 23-track treasure trove, and I’m happy to share with you the ones I enjoyed the most today.

Chip Treatment with Professor Oakes: ‘TURNTNES’

HEXAWE (which is brilliantly abbreviated from Hexadecimal Awesome!), is an international net label featuring artists and tracks created with LGPT, also known as Piggy Tracker (which is programmed by Marc Nostromo). Managed and run by several bosses who created a ‘low-level chaos wiki’ website, this label has released several compilation albums which include the HEXAWE catalog, casio relapse compo, and the very compilation this review will cover, ‘TURNTNES‘. This 17-track compilation — released on July 16, 2015 — features submissions from an eclectic mix of artists including Peter Swimm, PaK-Zer0, and overnrake (to name a few), and celebrates the 10-year birthday of this beloved program. The hitch? Submissions include a sample pack recorded by Doomcloud (an artist that boasts having traveled around the world 31 times by the ripe age of 14) straight out of his Nintendo Entertainment System with a MIDINES, and were only allocated up to 500k worth of the artists’ ‘own’ vocal samples.

Stoking the Forge: Comic Book Music Vol. 2 by Shawn Daley

A very merry month of May to one and all ChipWIN nation!  April brought our community a bevy of great albums to explore, enough to easily keep an avid aficionado busy for quite awhile.  In this tsunami of musical talent, I caught the full burst of Shawn Daley’s second volume of comic book inspired chipunk.

While Shawn has been honing his musical talents for over a decade, he exploded into view last year with the release of some exceptional 8bit covers of some of Bad Religion’s classic works.

Finally discovering his style, Shawn dovetailed his music with his additional love and talents in the comic arts.   He began crafting original works inspired by the beloved graphic novels and comics lining his walls.  He’s been releasing them in spurts via his Soundcloud account, compiled into volumes as they reach critical mass.  The first volume, released in June, was a great showcase of his talent, blossoming wonderfully in his latest release.
