Yo, wassup ChipWINners, and welcome back to Quick Shots: the album review column where I break down the highs and lows of an album, then give you a numerical tl;dr to help you determine if it’s right for you! This month, I have music from two acts out of Europe who have been featured on the blog before, but are vastly different in their musical offerings. One of these artists is someone who is incredibly popular in the scene and has been featured on ChipWIN compilations before. The other is a band who blurs the line between chiptune and more traditional synth and noise music, even going so far as to refer to their music as Dadaist. If that doesn’t have you raising your eyebrow in intrigue, I don’t know what will! So without further delay, I’d like you guys to join me as I review music by Corkscrew No. 4453556 and DJ-PIE!
Representing a journey through art can be an incredibly daunting task due to the abstract nature of audience expectation. Movies are an obvious choice for the easiest way to show the viewer a journey, followed closely by books. Tolkein’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ is one of the most loved books containing this trope, with Frodo and Sam’s journey to Mordor along with the other paths of the Fellowship. Perhaps the most difficult medium for this subject is the visual arts, where painter Thomas Cole used multiple canvases to depict a journey in his ‘Voyage of Life’ series. Somewhere in the middle of these difficulty levels lies musical depictions of a journey. Because it is a time-based art form like film, the listener does not have control over the length of the journey if they wish to reach its intended end. Some are longer than others, and what one learns on these journeys is different depending on the listener. (more…)
You might’ve heard of The Laohu through the grapevine, or via his track from ChipWIN: Volume 3, Bash of the Kaiju, or maybe you’ve just been a long-time fan of his since he started releasing music back in 2012. Regardless, it’s been almost three years since he last released an album through Bandcamp. In mid-March, he put out his latest musical endeavor through the Pxl-Bot label entitled ‘FROgs’, and the result is an eclectic mix of genres spanning progressive rock to electro.
