Aydan Appreciates: ‘[USA]’ by Anamanaguchi

Posted by

Anyone who’s ever listened to chipmusic has assuredly heard of the legendary Anamanaguchi. A four-piece group from New York City, their 2009 ‘Dawn Metropolis EP‘ was likely the first taste of chipmusic many of us received upon exploring the genre – myself included. 2013’s ‘Endless Fantasy’ saw a departure from this style and marked their first full-length foray into the world of electronic dance music, and spawned a semi-viral video in which the band launched a slice of cheese pizza into space. In October of 2019, they released ‘[USA]’, their second full-length album, and on the off-chance you missed it on release, I’m excited to share it with you all today!

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: MisfitChris – ‘Illegal Street Racing’

Posted by

After a long hiatus I’m back with ChipWIN writing about some chiptune music, and what better way than beginning with the fantastic album, ‘Illegal Street Racing’ by MisfitChris? This was initially released towards the end of January as solely a digital album. However, it wasn’t until June 24th, when ‘Data Airlines’ produced the cassette release of ‘Illegal Street Racing’, did it come under my radar.

Clover’s Comp Corral: Chiptunes4Autism Volume 4

Posted by

Chiptunes4Autism has been going for 4 years strong now, and another spring season brought us what may be their most exciting compilation yet! 28 tracks showcase a varied, fun, and hard-working collective that will take anyone who wants to help. All proceeds go to charities proud of neurodiversity, supporting autistic self-advocacy, mental health resources, and networks for marginalized groups. It’s really great. Also, the music kicks ass, and the people involved will steal your hearts.

By ‘steal your hearts’, of course, I mean I’m going to try and cast them in a heist movie.

Glenntai Got: ‘Am Happy’ by Pulsing

Posted by

With two releases in the same month you would expect this to be the latter of a two-part series. Even so, ‘Am Happy’ is Pulsing’s debut on Japan-based international net label Cheapbeats. Pulsing, a trio based out of Illinois, brings live guitar and drums into their pieces to create a raw energy that feels like a mix between harder grunge and the early works of fellow chip band from France, Please Lose Battle. What we get as a result is an upbeat album full of heavy guitar, melodic exposition and accompanying arp blips; one of the first ways I could describe it was as ‘a manic pixie dream-rock concert’. If that sounds like a fun time to you, keep reading after the jump for some examples.

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Glooms – ‘Vanilla Dome’

Posted by

I have had my hands full with Chip Bit Day, so instead of reviewing something new I decided to look back to an album that was released last year on ‘Datafruits’. ‘Vanilla Dome’ by ‘Glooms’ was a truly fantastic album. Created using a copy of Nanoloop 2 synced up to a Korg Electribe Drum Machine, Vanilla featured a vast amount skill with sound engineering and programming.
