Chip Bit Sid Takes On: ‘Chip To Be Square’ Charity Album

Posted by

Disclosure: This charity album is my own project. However, after discussing it with Brandon we decided it would be fine to promote, as all of the proceeds are going to charity.

Back in 2014 when Chip Bit Sid had just started, Superbyte was well into it’s 4th event and was popular as ever. I had been getting sucked into the chiptune community, had made a lot of friends, and was building a lot of traction with the blog. It was at this point that I decided that I wanted to sell a compilation, but with all the proceeds going to Barnardos, a charity that helped abandoned children. I immediately got a lot of artists who wanted to give a track to the cause and I got into making a physical CD to sell at Superbyte. Sales were better than expected, making over £220, with some of the money being given by the Superbyte group themselves! It was a great project which made me feel proud of the chiptune community as well as what I’d managed to achieve!

Fast forward to this year and Square Sounds Toyko is happening. I’ve managed to scrape the money for a holiday in Japan and, with some cash left over I decided it was time for another charity album called, ‘Chip To Be Square’. This time however I decided to team up with people from all over, with the money going towards Special Effect, a UK based charity which helps the less-abled play video games, by modifying controllers as well as utilising eye control.

Since the release of ‘Chip To Be Square’ on Bandcamp (02/09/2017) we’ve  raised a bit of money (as now £60), which has shown what the chiptune community capable of as well as how big its heart is. As the album is still fresh, below are a few choice tracks off the album to entice your ears; to people who are waiting to buy the CD at Squaresounds…I’ll see you there! ;)

Posted by

Hello all and welcome to the last leg of the Vol. 6 track reviews. One great thing with Chiptunes = WIN’s yearly mainline Volumes: the overall quality is so high and consistent, you’ll never feel like the compilation loses momentum at any point, even for the very last tracks. On the contrary. On this truly STELLAR Volume 6, some of my absolute favourites are actually part of the last ten! And I was lucky enough to review them. Let’s dive in! “La main à la pâte”!

Chip Bit Sid Takes on: TRUTHR – ‘Self titled’

Posted by

Hey guys, it’s been a while but I’m back and I’m reviewing Henry Homesweet’s latest inclination, ‘TRUTHR‘ and his self titled EP. I’ve been a huge fan of Henry Homesweet and his music, ever since he released his album, ‘Luke’s Atari’, and have since been following any music released under both his primary pseudonym and the various other names he’s released material under (e.g: 2a0xCYMBA, Essential Chip, Yeon).

Glenntai Got… ‘Bare Knuckle, a Streets of Rage Megamix’ by Auxcide

Posted by

For those of you from the west coast of the US and those of you familiar with the Philadelphia chiptune scene and/or MAGFest, the name Auxcide is likely a very familiar to you. Armed with several Gameboy Advance SPs, synthesizers and drum machines, his unique blend of electronic music genres within the media of chipmusic have struck deep emotions as much as it has made people dance. During this summer of excellent releases coming from talented composers, Cheapbeats has given us a treat by releasing Bare Knuckle: a 15-minute live-recorded medley full of music from the Streets of Rage/Bare Knuckle/ベア・ナックル series. Yuzo Koshiro has been known for his bouncy, syncopated dance rhythms that combined elements from house, jazz, hip-hop and a variety of EDM genres.  Continue after the jump for some good jams.

Chip Bit Sid Takes on: Mega Ran & Guests “Live at the Castle Hotel”

Posted by

Last month I was given exclusive tickets to go and see ‘Mega Ran live’ in Manchester at the ‘Castle Hotel’, courtesy of my chiptune buddy, ‘Auracle’. Auracle would also be opening for the Arizona-based rapper. I’d seen’ Mega Ran’ a few times already; twice at Superbyte and then again when he opened for ‘MC Lars’. However, I couldn’t pass this up as the ‘Castle Hotel’  is one of the smallest venues in townwhich gives its concerts a real, personal vibe. Getting up close and personal with Ran and his impeccable openers was definitely a sell straight away for me.

For those who don’t know Mega Ran, he is one of the big rappers of Chiptune and Nerdcore, starting off by spewing videogame inspired lyrics over a wide range of retro VGM songs. The majority of his tracks were inspired by Capcom games like ‘Mega Man’ (shock) however ‘Final Fantasy’ is also heavily referenced too.
