This month’s featured artist was born and raised in East Fresia, Germany. Which is a small coastal region, very close to the border with the Netherlands, and famous for its tea culture. Keno, a.k.a. Vault Kid has a long record of creating EDM jams that goes back all the way to 2012, and through his college years this habit remained strong. Suddenly, in 2016, the event of finding out about Chiptune changed his creative path forever. Let’s hear what this producer of catchy tunes has to say about our beloved music style.
Hey, ChipWINners! Long-time fans of ChipWIN may remember, on our very first compilation, a track called ‘Button Mash’ by a Detroit-based chipmusician named Snesei. With its high-energy percussion and cute melody, the track has cemented itself as a nostalgic trip down memory lane to the earliest days of my chipmusic blogging career. Every time I hear it, I can’t help but feel emotions rush over me as I recall my college years and the friends that I so cherished during that period. When I saw just four short days ago (as of the publication of this post) that Snesei released a short, 3-track EP with a guest remix included titled ‘Digression’, I was intrigued. Each track on this EP feels as though it’s been written from the heart, and with the central theme of growth, one can tell that a truly personal, loving touch is present throughout. But, I digress… let’s see what we have here.
I’m back again with another review, but this time, it’s gonna be different. I had the pleasure of going to 8Static Fest a few weeks ago (as a performer too!) and I thought what better way to share my experience of the whole event by making a review! And don’t worry, there’s plenty of memes, hence the Philadelphia chiptune scene.
You could remember Hypnogram, aka Noah Deck, from his self-titled debut EP released through chiptune netlabel Smoking Mirrors. You could also remember him from his contribution to µWIN, ‘Ephemeral Emerald’. Maybe you’ve seen him live at Little Sound Assembly among the likes of Tri Angles, Saskrotch, PANDAstar, or numerous others. Or, maybe this article will be the first you’ve heard of the man at the forefront of chiptrance music, in which case you’re in for a delectable aural treat. Hypnogram is a newer face in the chipscene and has seldom released music, but the few tracks this artist has revealed establishes his style and the sheer amount of polish that goes into his craft. With the release of his first full-length release, ‘Eye’ (again through Cincinnati-based netlabel Smoking Mirrors), this chiptrance master is ready to unveil his latest masterpiece to our beloved scene!
Take one small but awesomely dedicated group of folk, a thriving local chipscene, 5 years of monthly chipmusic shows, a successful Kickstarter campaign, and a CRAPTON OF WORK and what do you get?
In a word (two actually…),THIS:
Boasting a SPECTACULAR line-up of 30+ talented chipartists & visualists from various locales, this three day chipmusic festival hosted in the city of brotherly love is going to be ZOMBOFURKIN AMAZEBALLS!!!
Don’t believe me? Then check out the lineup for yourself below!!!
To share a bit of insight on the fest & 8static in general, here’s a few words directly from Emily Feder, the festival curator:
“8static has been something I’ve held close to my heart for the last few years. All the people involved feel the same way; we devote a good chunk of ourselves to make these events special every month. The past year has been amazing and has shown tremendous growth, but it was time to take a stand and plan something larger scale. Our fifth anniversary seemed like the perfect time to break new ground. Philadelphia is an amazing city & October is a beautiful time of year; I hope that people will come and visit for this show and fall in love with the city and scene here the same way that I did.”
Regarding the fantastic line-up, “I wanted it to remove any skepticism about the event. The amazing thing is that, of pretty much all the people invited to perform, no one really knew who else was playing. They just wanted to be a part of this because they trusted us to come through with a spectacular event. The reaction everyone had when they saw the full lineup was inspiring. This lineup is a once in a lifetime experience for a chip music fan.”
Or her tl;dr version here: “Last year we had 30 people perform in one night! Imagine what we can do with 3 days?” Indeed, Emily. Indeed.
Along with some other notable folks (MAGFest, kitsch-bent, & Grassroots Game Conference to be specific), ChipWIN is also very proud to be sponsoring this festival directly. Outside of BRKFest, it’s only the second time we’ve had the chance to directly contribute to a live show, and to be honest it #FEELSGOODMAN!
At any rate, if you’re any sort of chiptune fan & anywhere even near this incredible event when it starts TOMORROW NIGHT (!!!), I’ve only one thing left to say to you:
GET YOUR ASS TO 8STATIC FEST!!!!!!!
