Rhyphte Reviews ‘PWRNEON’ and Interviews The Mad Lads Behind It

Posted by

What’s up, gamers. If this isn’t the first article of mine you’ve scrolled through, you know I’m a sucker for living examples of collaboration in action. I love seeing different creative directions come together to present a totally new musical idea or experience, and, like many of you, I fucking adore LSDJ chiptune and Famitracker-based synthwave. Basically, it should come as no surprise to anyone that I’m about to unleash a whole article about ‘PWRNEON,’ an absolute banger of a single and cover of toasterpastries’ ‘PWRMEOW’ by Techno Mage, a Seattle-based duo comprised of famitracker musician Dan Butler and guitarist Austin Schuyler. The track premiered last night on Nightride.fm alongside a playlist of recent LSDJ tracks curated by Dan himself. There’s more to be said about Nightride, but first I’d like to kick things off with my own review of ‘PWRNEON.’

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Glooms – ‘Vanilla Dome’

I have had my hands full with Chip Bit Day, so instead of reviewing something new I decided to look back to an album that was released last year on ‘Datafruits’. ‘Vanilla Dome’ by ‘Glooms’ was a truly fantastic album. Created using a copy of Nanoloop 2 synced up to a Korg Electribe Drum Machine, Vanilla featured a vast amount skill with sound engineering and programming.

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Boaconstructor – ‘Winds Of Null’

Posted by

This year has been an excellent year for chipmusic using nanoloop. We’ve had a huge amount of releases ranging from the astounding ‘Geothermal’ by Classic Mistake, to the chilled as hell ‘Vanilla Dome’ by Glooms. This time we have Boaconstructor’s ‘Winds Of Null’. For context into ‘Boaconstructor’, he is a Seattle based musician who also runs ‘The Base bit’, one of the go-to net labels of chiptune. ‘The Base Bit’ have released a variety of accomplished albums such as ‘Refresh’ from Trey Frey, to ‘Steel City Zone’ by ‘HarleyLikesMusic’. It has been three years since ‘Boaconstructor’ has produced an album, with ‘Loop Dreams’ being released in 2015.

Whilst ‘Loop Dreams’ and ‘Winds Of Null’ were produced using Nanoloop, they are vastly different albums. ‘Loop Dreams’ focuses on using modulation to create weird and wonderful noises on a high BPM. ‘Winds Of Null’ on the other hand, focuses more on the bass, as well as detuning the melody and slowing down the music. For me I prefer Boaconstructor’s latest album, as I found it more accessible to listen to. The recording and mastering are also, in my opinion, much higher quality. Everything seems to pop better, with the levels balanced much better than ‘Loop Dreams’.

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Graz – ‘Monolith’

Posted by

Hey guys. I’ve been extremely busy these past few months, mainly down to getting the funding secure for Chip Bit Day 18 (which you can read about it later on after the review). Thankfully I’m still finding time to do my reviews for ChipWIN! This month I’m reviewing an album that I’ve been sitting on for a while now; ‘Monolith’ by Graz and released with ‘Ravertooth Tiger’.

The last time I review a Graz album was back in 2016 with ‘Ravepunk’ and that released by ‘Cheapbeats’. It was a great listen whilst feeling incredibly boppy & funky. ‘Monolith’ however is a lot different compared to ‘Ravepunk’, sounding more heavy whilst feeling darker & grittier.

The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews ‘Reminisce’ by WMD

Happy October, folks. I hope you are all well.

Every month that I write these blog entries, I can’t believe how quickly the year flies by. Up in New York City, we’re partly settled into fall; the leaves are barely starting to change colors, and the weather can’t seem to make up its mind. I’ve always regarded autumn to be a time of renewal, and the soundtracks I listen to during this time of the year tend to remain the most nostalgic to me throughout the year.  That being said, we have been blessed with a new WMD album, entitled ‘Reminisce’ and I do believe this one will stay with me in future seasons, taking me right back to the memories of this October.

Kuma, V. Forge, Chris K’s Resplendent ‘Forest = ВИН’ Review

Posted by

Hey, what’s up ChipWINners? It’s your boy BronxKuma, welcoming you back to the blog.  This time around, we’re going to be doing something very special, as today I’ll be joining forces with Viridian Forge & Chris Krogsgard to cover the latest release from the label: ‘Forest = ВИН‘!

‘Forest = ВИН’ is a truly noteworthy release because it represents continued success for our collective.  Taking the opportunity to work with Kubbi and Agri, the founders of the Russian based Forest net label and long time supporters and partners of ChipWIN, we’ve put together a collection of aria that is truly wonderful.  This is something we’re all very proud of, as this stellar accomplishment is the 18th album ChipWIN has released in five years! Consisting of thirteen phenomenal tracks from all over the globe, ‘Forest = ВИН’ is a labor of love that is so absolutely resplendent that we just can’t wait to share with you.  So let’s not waste anymore time: sit back, relax, and plug in those headphones: it’s time to go wandering into the Forest.
