Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Kosmic Tantra – ‘Tribal Rock’

Posted by

Hello, how are you all doing today? This week I’ll be reviewing a very interesting album called, ‘Tribal Rock’ by, ‘Kosmic Tantra’ and it’s an incredible selection of tracks to say the least. To give you context,  ‘Kosmic Tantra’ are a french 3 person electronic rock band, consisting of a variety of different unique instruments; from the staple gameboy running LSDJ, to the more abstract, Didgeridoo and Accordion. Yes, you heard that right; throughout the entire run time of the album you’ll be hearing  amazing ‘Eastern outback instruments’ whilst chiptune & electronic music are used as the backbone of each track. A first for the genre, I think!

Chip Bit Sid Takes On: Portopak – ‘Bull Inside The Echo Chamber’

Posted by

Hello everyone! Whilst I was extremely busy these past few weeks, I still managed to find the time to write about this small chiptune EP called, ‘Bull Inside the Echo Chamber’ by ‘Portopak’.  The last time he was featured on the ‘Chip Bit Sid’ blog, was two years ago, covering his album, ‘Monsters’ as I first started out. If you haven’t heard of him before, Portopak is a Pittsburgh based chiprock musician, and his style is a combination between chiptune and shoegaze music, using a lot of echo on both his guitar as well as his own vocals. ‘Bull Inside the Echo Chamber’ is a first for ‘Portopak’, as it’s his first song that’s actually included lyrics with his vocals, and I’m excited to explore it past the fold.

Kuma’s Quick Shots: Round 19

Hey, what’s up, ChipWINners? Welcome back to the blog! This time around, I’ll be reviewing two amazing albums from two different rock acts.  One of them is a new band from the west coast that makes some incredibly heartfelt sadtune and emo.  The other is from an underrated artist from France who’s made an album that’s equal parts alt rock and synthwave.  Let’s not delay any longer. Sit back, relax, and plug in those headphones as I take the time to review work by Dad Mode and Le Xowar.

Aydan Appreciates: ‘Phantom Beach’ by Here Between You Me

Posted by

Hey there, ChipWINners! In case you don’t recall their Chiptunes = #SRSBSNS track ‘Forever Alone‘, Here Between You Me is a hype-fueled chiptune/rock/pop group whose releases are generally few and far between. Over the years, they’ve released tracks to the public through their Bandcamp in the form of singles, or on Soundcloud in the cases of covers, rough cuts and demos. Now, with the release of their first EP, ‘Phantom Beach’, the polish that these Los Angeles based champs have put into their music really shows, and this has quickly become one of Brandon’s and my favorite releases of this year thus far. So what’s all the fuss about, anyway? Let’s dive into this sonic ocean of a release and find out!

ChipWIN-tern Spotlight: “YUMEMI/LONELY PLANET GIRL” by Slime Girls

In a far off place, untouched by worldly woes, there is a place where friends can get together and make sentimental chiptune jams for all to hear and enjoy. The people who hear these songs know that their lives will never be as perfect as the emotions they experience from these magical tunes, but they listen all the same, hoping to experience that moment – no matter how briefly – that they’ll never truly feel in real life. A moment of nostalgia for something that never happened to them, but they wish it had. (more…)

Chris Considers: ‘into stardust’ by astroskeleton

Posted by

The music of astroskeleton occupies the heartfelt and emotional avenues of chipmusic, filled with starry-eyed introspection. Jackson Scovel laid the groundwork to his signature sound last year with astroskeleton’s debut album, ‘you are not alone’. In his latest EP, ‘into stardust’, he once again employs the WINning combination of famitracker and live guitar+drums in order to create an unforgettable shoegazing atmosphere that is not to be missed. While this is still the astroskeleton we all know and love, he has also grown and evolved as an artist, densely packing the aural landscape of these four tracks to craft a cohesive experience that you’ll want to repeat again and again.
