Y’all. It has not been easy deciding what to write about. The late autumn/early winter releases have been fucking killer. Right now, I’m sitting on like, two half-finished reviews—which is nuts! But I’ve just decided to take the plunge on this ’cause I’ve gotta honor what Matt has accomplished here. Watch Out For Snakes (hereon referred to as WOFS), is a synthwave project from Matt Baum featuring prominent chiptune elements and is a cornerstone of the Atlanta synthwave scene. When I heard ‘Arms Race’ on Volume 7 of the annual compilation, I knew that something truly remarkable was taking shape in the chiptune scene and I couldn’t be happier to see this fucking stellar release at the forefront of Georgia’s chiptune landscape.

Glenntai Got: ‘Continue?’ by Blue Navi

Many of you may not be too familiar with Blue Navi. That might also change when you discover that they previously went under the moniker Ayoshutduff, who has been a seasoned veteran of many Chiptunes = WIN releases. With this EP, titled ‘Continue?’, we have a three-track collection of music finished since his previous, hefty album late last October. Like many artists expanding their level of versatility, Blue Navi decided to experiment with styles out of their comfort zone, and in this case we’ve been given some synthwave that carries a serious mood about it. Happy March, folks!

Spring marches forward and the month is quickly coming to an end. Between the extra hour, change of sunlight, and good music, I’m feeling pretty good. This month, I wanted to share an album with the ChipWIN community that was brought to my attention by President Hoodie called ‘Hue’, by MYRONE.  While the album is not chiptune, anyone into tracker programming can easily appreciate programmed synths and acknowledge the time spent in recording, mixing, and playing instruments, especially guitar.

Glenntai Got: “Don’t Wait” by mal4m

Let’s face some hard truths, no matter how popular chiptune gets (as a niche medium), there have always been a lot of people thinking it’s starting to fade away. The reality, though, is that isn’t even close to true. There will always be jaded people; this is inevitable. However chiptune, much like synthesizers in the 80’s, has helped many people evolve their tastes in music beyond just what they expected. A lot of expectations were the concept of the nostalgia and limitations of the sound of a single console or a few combined. It has brought people into a whole new perspective of appreciating composition, sound design, and genres they never expected to find growing on them. People who haven’t explored their music tastes before chip music are exploring the wide variety of music that’s out there. We have people continuing to put chiptune elements and chip music influences in their music, whether it’s strictly hardware, strictly software, or somewhere in between. This is exactly where mal4m’s EP, “Don’t Wait,” comes into play.

Guérin’s Dissections: ‘DESTINY’ by Tri Angles

‘DESTINY’ is an essay on wanderlust. It is a statement of contentment and restlessness. Tri Angles conjures amazing emotions in his music, and this album is no different. Though only loosely connected to chiptune at this point, Tri Angles is still part of the community, and his work deserves recognition for the ways it pushes genre boundaries and demonstrates composition prowess. In an album that most closely resembles the music he produced under his previous pseudonym, SMILETRON, ‘DESTINY’ truly captivates and shimmers with a unique beauty that most other musicians can only dream of.
