The Unicorn Princess Royally Reviews ‘Swim’ by Laser Life

Posted by

Happy August, folks!

Shortly after this post becomes published, August will come to a close, and I will be taking September off to wrap up some work of my own. Before I go on my short break, I wanted to shape everyones’ attention towards a synthwave release by an artist that I found via the ChipWINdex (a great resource brought to you by ChipWIN folks full of relevant releases that you’ll most likely adore).  I present to you: Laser Life, and their album, ‘Swim’.

Before I even hit ‘play’ on track one, I could tell an overload of care went into this indie release. Laser Life has a memorable logo that is both unique and simple, and the album art (created by Everything Studio) is intensely thought provoking: It gives off a sense of silent surroundings but loud thoughts, and transporting oneself to someplace else.

Paul’s Tech Talk – Introduction: ‘Turning a page of LSDJ History’

Posted by

Hello everyone! Paul here from the French Chip Duo Pain Perdu.

Some of you may know of our YouTube channel, where I’ve done a few tutorial videos about technical aspects of LSDJ that I thought were often misunderstood, overlooked or underused. In terms of ergonomy, raw music-making potential and how easily people can access parameters that grant extremely minute control over the sound, LSDJ is a fantastic program; in fact it stands out for me as the tracker that strikes the most perfect balance between complexity and accessibility. The fact that it is displayed in the Sweden Museum of Music and Performing Arts is well-deserved.

Chris Considers: ‘Out Of Memory’ by Zalza

Posted by

Greetings, ChipWINners! It’s good to be back on the blog with a phenomenal new album to review. While others may ponder what future 2017 has in store, we chiptune fans have a particular proclivity to maintain a strong sense of reverence and respect for the past. There is no other recent release that exemplifies this ideal better than ‘Out Of Memory’ by Zalza.

‘Out Of Memory’ is a tribute to humanity’s achievements through the exponential growth of technology, focusing on the exciting period of time from the late 70’s to the early 90’s when the personal computer rapidly grew from a compelling oddity into an essential, multi-billion dollar industry. Throughout the album, Zalza makes use of vintage computer documentaries reporting on “something referred to as technology”, guided programming tutorials, and giddy new PC owners who “just installed the Internet on their computer”. It’s a thematic construct that is at times humorous, but always intensely inspirational. This theme is all the more authentic coming from an artist who tinkered and toiled his way through those halcyon days himself. Let’s take a closer look at just a few of the excellent tracks from ‘Out Of Memory’.
